my father-in-law is a “I know a guy” Guy. sadly all the old Guys are aging out of the Guy Economy. Guys are fundamentally incompatible with Hustle Culture because it’s not about “winning” a deal, it’s about collecting favors and goodwill in a mutually-beneficial cycle. protect your local Guy Economy

Man, this is a pretty fucking gross move from Amazon, huh? Good on @bookshop.org for not mincing words, though:

A quick resistance task:
1. Google Gulf of Mexico
2. “Gulf of America" is the top
3. Click on the three little dots to the right of it
4. Select "Send Feedback"
5. Click on "Gulf Of America"
6. Select "Inaccurate content"
7. Select "Incorrect" and type in "The correct name is “Gulf of Mexico"

This is a truly heroic thread about (extra)ordinary people meeting the moment and/but the dynamic will be super familiar to anyone whose little group grew and organized to meet a crisis, even if they didn’t grow as large or do as much. A good reminder.
Update on my life: Last year, I joined my kids' school's PTA, because they needed a treasurer and I'm good enough with numbers. It was a straightforward, self-contained job: balancing the checkbook for an organization that only did a few fundraisers each year.

I always think it’s important to point out (since it usually is little discussed these days) that Rosa Parks was fired from her seamstress job in Montgomery and was basically blacklisted from being employed in the city. She had to move to Detroit because of discrimination after this.

Here's your daily reminder that bookstores keep the love of reading alive — but they also keep neighborhoods beautiful. They are places to gather, to celebrate stories, to find community.

Please do your holiday shopping at your local independent bookstore, if you are lucky enough to still have one.

After all the hand-wringing over Black men shifting to the right, the vast majority of this group did what they had to do.

Despite their consistently progressive voting record, in the public imagination they are viewed as “civic deadbeats” and impulsive children that need to be chided and cajoled.
For Black male voters, apologies are in order, and some respect would be nice too
There’s plenty of blame to be passed around after the presidential election. Just don’t come for Black male voters.

Super excited to see this bookstore pop up on Bluesky
If we start posting here, is it contributing to the inevitable creep of paid promotional ads?

What if instead we just asked questions into the scrolling void? Not unlike this, but even more like, "Why is there something rather than nothing?"

I was unable to save
a single life

I couldn't stop
a single bullet

so I circle cemeteries
that aren't there
search for words
that aren't there
I run

to the aid uncalled for

I want to get there ontime
even if it's already over

As we approach Banned Books week, here's my annual reminder:
If you're going to partake, buy and read banned books from *living* authors. The Bradbury and Vonnegut estates don't need your money, but Maia Kobabe probably does.
