Of course, we’re entitled to call ourselves Americans. Is there any other country in this hemisphere (or the world, for that matter) that includes “… of America” in its official name?
If Canada changes its name to “United Provinces of America” we may have a conflict. Until then….

I don't get the complaint on "Americans." Aren't we the only country with "America" in the name? "United States of Americans" is too long and there's no reason not to drop everything but Americans. And there is no confusion with the continents—"North Americans" & "South Americans" work for those.

Not an American but I agree, USian is silly. Every country has a demonym, everybody knows what you mean when you say 'American'.

If you were talking about the people of a continent, you'd say 'North Americans'.

Faux pendants pretend that "Americans" as a national collective term is somehow bigoted.

It's the name of our country!

A lot of people on this topic white-knight for Canadians. As a person born in Canada, I can confirm that I have never once heard a person use the expression “American” and thought they meant Canadians, and know no other Canadian who has thought they meant a Canadian.

But the government of Ireland doesn’t actually get to dictate the meaning of “British isles” - it’s a term of geography, not political boundaries, and it’s been in use for over two millennia to encompass both Britain and Ireland.

Wait, why is “sportsball” bad? I always found it a little charming in the contexts where ive heard it used.

Generally someone self-identifying as a total non-sports person signaling they will try their best when the sports metaphors start getting thrown around in any given conversation.

Wait.

So the business proposal is that if one in four people in the entire world are spending 200 bucks a year on OpenAI they'll break even?

THAT'S the plan?

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

I literally never heard of anybody using the term "USians" until this thread. Is it pronounced "USE-ians" or "U.S.-ians"?
I mean, whatever it is, it's nuttier than squirrel poo, but it's not particularly annoying.

Calling Americans “USians” is a puerile attempt to show disdain for an entire group of people and you look stupid if you do it, is all I’m saying

Like it’s one thing for a group of people to say “I prefer to be called this” it’s another to TELL another whole country of diverse ethnicities and heritage that you will now be calling them something else.

I understand the reasons some non-Americans have for using this, but this post is correct — you’ll be immediately ignored here if you use it.

If I wrote a post referring to “UKians” all the people living there would ignore me too, and rightly so.
If your argument involves referring to Americans as “USians” it doesn’t matter how cogent the rest of your point may be tbh

Me about to piss off a bunch of capitalists: If Bezos doesn’t want to pay his fair share in corporate taxes, I don’t see why we shouldn’t nationalise Amazon and make it a subsidiary of the post office.

1) That post is seven, count 'em, *seven* months old.

2) A friend of mine was hired for that job three months ago.

You mock me, LinkedIn. You mock me!

I'm actually not 100% sure the Democrats "won" and yet "Well, the Democrats won but THE PEOPLE didn't!" feels like something I'd only say if I were younger and dumber than I am while also being ...not wholly inaccurate? 🤔🤷‍♂️

What's certain is Trump LOST, which is the most important thing long term.
It’s clear that Democrats won the shutdown, even after caving in.

That’s how bad things are for Trump.
