rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

Playwright and cricket fan Tom Stoppard, who has died aged 88, wrote a famous speech in praise of the cricket bat in his play The Real Thing (1982), using the skilful creation of a bat as a metaphor for the writing of plays.

That one was.

And Stoppard can still make me cry.

You should see how they all do with making a clock... updates every minute, and somehow most never get any better at it.. and those that do, will not necessarily in the next minute.

Ok, but people still find ways to buy meth but we still don't sell it at Boots and let the Sinoloa Cartel advertise on football uniforms.

In the Cycle Shop waiting for my fixed bike. A lady walks in with a puppy Jack Russell, which gets free and runs about; she sniffs me, darts away, back to sniff, retreats again.

And this stranger starts stroking my jumper.

column on jude bellingham and the media. race is an issue, of course. but it's also the fact that bellingham has no time whatsoever for the core belief of english football: that england is the centre of the footballing universe

England deserve a tide of goodwill, yet somehow Jude Bellingham is still a target | Jonathan Liew
It’s hard to disagree with Ian Wright when he suggests the midfielder has been subjected to a timeworn double standard

As a software developer in safety-critical fields: Hahahaha no.
I think that may be the core division here: if you are an author or an artist the cons of generative AI very likely outweigh the pros for you

If you are a software developer the opposite is true

A book is not a luxury item.

(It can be, but so can food.)

Books are both amazing and cheap.

After all my years, I'm still thrilled by a new book.

Even a bad book is full of potential before you read it.

Read* more books. You'll see what the fuss is all about.

I give a shit about multimillionaires and billionaires existing and not paying tax on their actual wealth.

I've said it begore and I stand by it: they need to limit the number of people a single account can follow. You can have as many followers as you like! But you can't follow more than 500 accounts at once. Make engagement farming unappealing, for heaven's sake.

Because people *still* don’t understand that overseas students subsidise home students. This is punishing everyone involved.
With Rachel Reeves reportedly set to apply a new tax on tuition fees paid by overseas students, most Britons support such a move at the previously mooted level of 6%

Support: 57%
Oppose: 18%

So, #CricketSky... Shukri Conrad saying that SA wanted to make India "grovel" (and admitting that he chose the word with its historic connotation). What do we think - major faux pas or storm in a teacup?

IMO not actually a big deal, though a stupid thing to say. There's no race dynamic here.
