You should read this. It is the type of detail that experts in authoritarian regimes see as telling.
In this case, state agents are offered impunity from higher ups, and the legal system is rendered inoperative as a mode of accountability.

Things have not improved. The government won't comply with court orders. Agents are behaving more aggressively. Schools are offering remote learning into April. The tapering of national media coverage has emboldened DHS.

Once again, it turns out “fully autonomous” means “a guy in the Philippines.”

An excellent deep dive into one such instance by U Amsterdam Prof Ashley Mears
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

again we do not really do a good job of explaining how wealthy people like Jeff Bezos are

his net worth is $253.2 billion.
so he could take one million dollars, and just light it on fire
and then do it again tomorrow
and again the day after that
and then do it every day for 693 years and 8 months

The hometown newspaper that I read as a teenager through Watergate and Vietnam and made me crave the life of a reporter is now being butchered by a billionaire who had $75 million to bribe and flatter a president and his wife but nothing to save journalism, an bulwark of the republic itself. Got it.
Old: “Go on home, get a nice hot bath. Rest up...Then get your asses back in gear. Nothing's riding on this except the, uh, first amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press, and maybe the future of the country.”

New: “Go on home…Nothing’s riding on this.”

“You might say that this film is documenting this administration’s efforts to give birth to a nation, no?”

“So who’s to say, really?”

The “aw” kills me.
In the last 48 hours, Musk's reactions to the Epstein release show exactly why he bought Twitter.

He's used the platform to call coverage of his emails with Epstein as "lies," elevated his fans who have defended him, and gotten positive reinforcement from his AI chatbot.

For a week, right-wing media have baselessly smeared Alex Pretti as a "domestic terrorist" and "race traitor" who tried to "commit a mass murder" of DHS agents

We, the employees of the NLRB, are calling on members of Congress to reject the Senate’s proposed funding deal unless it includes meaningful reforms for ICE and CBP’s operations.

Our Union has never endorsed a government shutdown before. But we believe we have no other choice.
A legal asylum-seeker who works at Chipotle and plays music at a church in Maine went missing. His pastor searched and searched, eventually finding his abandoned car with the keys on the floor.

ICE grabbed him. No criminal record. No explanation.
HUGE news! This is about a Trump admin effort to arrest thousands of screened and vetted refugees in Minnesota and fly them to Texas to be jailed and then interrogated.

After the interrogation is over, people are being dumped on the street and told to find their own way back.
Best read (if at all) after refreshing one's recollection about the rants in his interview with Isaac Chotiner www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

The #1 New York Times bestseller The Sirens’ Call is now in paperback! Chris Hayes masterfully explores how our focus has been commodified & manipulated, urging us to reclaim control over our lives & future. The Sirens’ Call is the big-picture vision we urgently need to offer clarity & guidance.

People keep referencing Rittenhouse, but he is only one salient example of many. I was at a gun control march in 2018 and there was a guy with an AR-15 (not law enforcement) just smiling as people went by.

Thanks for posting. This question is particularly salient for Minnesota folks.
For "One First," I wrote about DOJ's unprecedented attempt to secretly strong-arm a widely respected district judge in the Cities Church protest case—and why everyone, especially other federal judges, should read Chief Judge Schiltz's two letters in response:
