what makes you think I haven't studied it?

If you'd asked me five years ago if I'd talk about insurance in a climate class AND THE STUDENTS WOULD LIKE IT, I'd say you were nuts.

Reminds me of this comment by Kerry Emanuel

I taught a new class on climate risk this fall. One of the things I emphasized was the role of insurance in our economy and how climate change is blowing it up.

In the end of semester evaluations, the students really liked learning about insurance.

Wow, those are expensive. LED lights must be cheaper.

it's hot here, too. it's like something has changed with the climate.

I went to the #bcstx Costco today and put my car sunshade in the windshield to keep the car cool. While 81F in Dec. is actually pretty comfortable, I can't help but think of what those extra degrees of warmth will feel like in August.
#bcstx officially topped off at 81° this afternoon at Easterwood Airport.

We'll put Christmas Eve Eve 2025 in the books as tying for the THIRD hottest December 23rd of record (alongside 1955)

The thing is that they must understand that the DOE CWG report was a dismal failure because it was so bad. This report is going to make the DOE report look like a paradigm of great science.

The more I think about it ("I'm going to write a National Assessment in a few weeks using AI") the more I think they're just trolling. It's simply not possible.
The full spiked 60 Minutes CECOT package, clean & subtitled. 1/5

I'll make a prediction: They will never release any National Climate Assessment.

The next National Climate Assessment will be written by five climate deniers and an AI in a trench coat.
I look forward to the legally required, transparent peer review process required by the US Global Change Research Act and the Information Quality Act. I always thought they would try to do a NCA with Judith Curry, five old men and a LLM.
It’s the gold standard of US climate research. Contrarians could write the next one.
Researchers who have downplayed the threat of global warming have been asked to author the next National Climate Assessment.

@hausfath.bsky.social makes his predictions for 2026 and 2027 temperatures on The Climate Brink. I don’t need any fancy science to tell you that both years gonna be en fuego.

Sadly, I think that makes it less likely he'll protect our weather infrastructure

If you need help, @agu.org has a page to walk you through the process.

Please take a few minutes to do this. Democracy only works if people speak out.

Save NCAR from being dismantled today!
The Trump Administration has vowed to dissolve the center that provides critical extreme weather and climate data for our nation.

Please write to your congressional reps about the NCAR budget cuts

DOE CWG continues to produce work with a consistent level of quality

If you’re at the AGU meeting, you should show up and record a few minutes of your thoughts about NCAR.

Can someone run a model with the RCP3578 emissions scenario?

Update: it appears this is payback for Colorado’s governor not playing nice with Trump

They’re not even pretending that it’s for any kind of legitimate reason. Instead, they’re trying to dismantle NCAR to suppress knowledge.
The administration dismantling NCAR is scientific vandalism, much like the Taliban demolishing cultural artifacts.

I came to the US over 10 years ago for a postdoc at NCAR. It changed my life and supercharged my ability to do science. NCAR's unique community nature makes it a global node in atmospheric and climate research. It's really not possible to overstate its value for science and society.

I don’t know how many people came from outside the US.

Maybe it’s just me but the vibe at #AGU25 seems off
There is a notable lack of government scientists at #AGU25.
