Alan has it right - we had NOTHING to do with "climate hysteria" and the sudden inability to focus on trustworthy AI for weather is only going to hurt us. We need to find a way to fund this critical research!

NEW: The NWS has received permission to hire up to 450 meteorologists/hydrologists/radar technicians after DOGE-related cuts. Agency also given a public safety exemption from federal hiring freeze after losing more than 550 people in those cuts. (1/2)

The Trump administration wants to reverse a 2009 EPA finding that greenhouse gases endanger people. The finding is the basis for much of the United States' climate change regulations.

One of the comments that struck me in yesterday's call is how NOAA cuts are already affecting forecast capabilities. According to 45-year hurricane veteran Dr. Frank Marks, staff needed to fly NOAA Hurricane Hunters is down 50% this year. He's volunteering to pick up shifts to keep them running ⬇️

There have been claims that NOAA/NWS did not foresee catastrophic TX floods--but that's simply not true. This was undoubtedly an extreme event, but messaging rapidly escalated beginning ~12 hrs prior. Flood Watch mid PM, "heads up" outlook late PM, flash flood warnings ~1am.
WPC issued as many as six MPDs for the deadly flash flooding in the TX Hill Country starting yesterday evening and lasting through much of today. The first MPD generally set the stage for what was to come, while the next three shown were as the event unfolded.
