2-3 terms of a Trump-like, anti-establishment politician, we will get to a society where people get arrested for criticizing the government.

This is the trajectory we are on.
This is where we are heading.

Ross Douthat never asks real questions and follow-ups the way a journalist would. And that's because Ross is not a journalist. He's a propagandist of a sort often found in totalitarian societies.
I wish Ross Douthat had followed up, asking Andrew Kolvet, a Turning Point USA spokesperson, to substantiate these assertions about the way that "people" supposedly are, and whether such views are "as old as time," a claim that should raise the hackles of anybody who studies history.

The logical endpoint of class reductionism: solidarity demands that we support a racist “worker” and label anyone who takes offense at racial slurs as a decadent bourgeois.
“Those of us on the left should be fighting to improve protections for workers of all races, and thereby for the betterment of people’s material conditions regardless of their views,” Arash Azizi argues:
Why the Cinnabon Story Doesn’t Make Me Happy
The left should be promoting working-class solidarity, not delighting in seeing workers summarily dismissed.
