I've done my best to capture the essence of these priceless, but mostly dying, ecosystems, and am over the moon with the results. 🌎

Today in Bantry Bay and in a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) around Garinish Island, two under 18m vessels have been pair trawling.

While they are most likely fishing for sprat, and that's not illegal for these trawlers, we have 3 key questions for the government ...

This bears repeating daily: We have been indoctrinated into believing that capitalism is inherently rational, when it is not. Homo economicus never existed.
There are a lot of reasons for the failure of this narrative when it runs up against reality, but I think a lot of it is that we’ve been indoctrinated into this notion that capitalism is somehow inherently rational, which it is not

Min Jack Chambers claim: “number of judicial reviews rapidly growing. 2024 saw 43% increase on 2023, & 2025 a further 30% increase in cases in Court”

Factcheck “number of JR decreasing year on year..members of public to take 40% fewer in 2025 & overall JRs will be 15% lower this year”

If we deregulate and deregulate eventually the market will be free to fix everything. We know it works because we have such great examples like the tulip bubble or the 30's stock market bubble or the dot.com bubble or the housing bubble and now the AI bubble. All these things ended fantastically 🤦🤦

Same in the UK, where environmental regulations are scapegoated for blocking housing — meanwhile developers are sitting on empty houses because supplying enough for people to live in would bring prices (and profits) down.
This has *nothing* to do with judicial reviews preventing housing projects.

It's down to government ideology, ie that the private market is the solution to the housing shortage, when all past experience shows that only *public* housing will solve it.

Translation: let's flush what's left of our natural heritage down the toilet, to allow the government to hide its direct responsibility for the housing crisis, and to allow rich developers to keep on getting richer.

NO, don't let them do this
Under the guise of 'speeding the delivery of essential infrastructure', the government is going to basically remove the option of taking judicial reviews.

Very often, this is the only legal route communities have to defend local ecosystems against being destroyed.

Kerry slug, native only to some parts of western Ireland, Spain, and Portugal, so one of our Lusitanian species.

Evidence that the biological colonisation of Ireland was largely from a western, Iberian origin? Or just later introductions by prehistoric people?

Truth is, we still don't know.

The evidence required to justify renewal of the derogation simply does not exist. It would be deeply unfair to farmers, as it locks them into a high-input, high-cost system that is environmentally unsustainable & increasingly incompatible with EU law, setting them up for a forced adjustment later.

I never noticed this old tree stump in the woods until the other day.

But that's how it is here. Even after getting on for 17 years living with a wild rainforest ecosystem, I still frequently make new discoveries.

And I suspect it will always be so, for the rest of my days.
