After 2 years of work, I've finally taken delivery of an actual printed copy of my second book 'The Magic of an Irish Rainforest: A Visual Journey'.

I've done my best to capture the essence of these priceless, but mostly dying, ecosystems, and am over the moon with the results. 🌎

48% of Ireland's waterbodies are so polluted, contaminated with chemicals, choked with algae, deprived of oxygen, lacking in species variety or physically altered and damaged that they fail to meet minimally acceptable standards.

And it's getting worse.

Important thread that *every* Irish environmentalist should read before voting in the presidential election.

In short: Humphreys was just as disastrous for the environment as she was on social policy.

Let's explore the Green credentials of Heather Humphreys - The woman former GP member Brian Leddin thinks should be president.
She advocated for an increased burn period during her time as Minister for Heritage, as well as prolonging the period during which hedgerows could be cut. #Spéirgorm 1/n

Orla nails it 🎯

Exactly why the Green Party was happy to prop up Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil in the last government, and to hell with the notion of allying environmental and social justice, is becoming ever more clear.

"But Heather Humphreys was the minister who saw the heritage Bill ammendments that increased scrub burning and hedge destruction how could Brian Leddin side with that over left wing economics...?"

Because plenty of green TDs never cared about the environment either

In any discussion of food and farming, unless your solution can be scaled to feed 8 billion people, you shouldn't be taken seriously. Unfortunately, cottagecore fantasies that would feed only the richest consumers, leaving billions to starve, are all too common.

Well said @irishrainforest.bsky.social - Leddin must not have paid attention to recent speeches from the Taoiseach and government (in)action.

Meanwhile, the EPA tells us today that water quality in our rivers and lakes has deteriorated again.

Ex-Green TD Brian Leddin is leaving the Greens over the party's support for "far left" Connolly, and voting for Fine Gael's Humphreys as president.

He believes climate and ecological breakdown are not left-right issues.

He's very wrong: *capitalism* is their core driver.

Climate change is entirely a political issue. It's not that the right are all deniers, it's just that the folk on the right who believe in climate change temper any actions with the means to make a profit.

Succession. Bramble islands form, slowly linking up, providing the conditions for trees to escape the confines of the hedges. Nascent woodland not grown in peat & wrapped in a tree guard. Several chapters in the book talk about this process. @irishrainforest.bsky.social @rewildscotland.bsky.social

The protection of the environment for the benefit of all is a left-right issue. Here’s why:

Who benefits from environmental destruction? The rich. Who pays for it? Everyone else. Who pays the most? The poorest people in society. It doesn’t get more starkly left-right than that.

The one I'm using is Vansky (I think). It seems pretty good, despite only costing about €12 online.

More after dark magic in the rainforest with a UV torch.

Some species of fungi are bioflorescent in ultraviolet light, making them glow against the blackness of night.

A walk through the woods becomes a truly enchanting experience.

omg I though it's an exaggeration, but no, not at all! Hymenochaete corrugata, a fungus that evolved a strategy of "first glue it in place, then eat out the insides" in order to consume twigs in the air, avoiding competition with fungi on the ground!! 🤯

A stick, hanging in mid-air?
What's going on?

Hazel glue fungus!

Keeping a dead twig attached to a living stem allows the glue fungus to break it down without competition from the many other fungi that work at ground level. Nature is *so* amazing!

Its not monsters from outer space
Its humans scraping the bottom floor and sucking up every life form that exists, leaving nothing
Fish often in vain flee for their lives

Also releases 370 million metric tons of planet-warming c02 every year, roughly same as running 100 coal power plants

Given a choice between
1. Honouring commitments on fighting one of (if not THE) greatest ever threats to humanity - climate breakdown
2. Cute hoor politics

Fianna Fáil opt for ... Cute hoor politics.

Leopards, spots, and all that.

Connolly literally has repeatedly openly condemned Russia, including on radio today. Like, what exactly do you want from her? I have criticisms of Connolly (eg on Syria) but the Russia stuff is, with respect, complete horseshit
