Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.

And you know why?

Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.
BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.

this is why we don’t comply in advance.

relatedly, this is why i am irate at every children’s hospital that cancelled their gender affirming care programs without a fight. when you have the law and the facts on your side you especially have to fight back.

Again, all I'm asking is that any Democrat who wants my vote support 1. Reverting Trump's anti-trans policies, 2. Commit to fighting against the future erosion of trans rights, and 3. Support legislation codifying trans rights into law.

Very weird how many of you centrists think that's unreasonable

This is a terrible precedent to set not just for the families of trans youth. If the federal government can pick a big enough hostage, state officials will be powerless to stop threats against them. They inherently lose state sovereignty over regulating their own matters.

In other words, the judge basically said that to get the hospital to comply with state law would potentially risk the closure of the hospital due to loss of medicaid funding. It effectively means that the federal government through extrajudicial threats has abrogated state anti discrimination law.

A group of families sued Colorado children's hospital for violating state anti discrimination law for stopping provision of gender affirming care under threats by the Trump admin. The court found they violated state law but found the risks to the hospital too large.

They feed until only the factories remain.

I've said this before, but it makes me insane that in an age of human civilization when the ultra-rich have hoarded over half of all wealth, the go-to visual shorthand for depictions of gluttony is still "fat"

You deserve access to abortion care if you are pregnant and do not want to be. Full stop.

Your reasons are your reasons and they are good enough.

Abortion is healthcare and everyone deserves healthcare access.
You don’t need a traumatic or tragic story to deserve abortion care.

I had a great aunt we called Aunt Sherry whose real name was Rose. she had a brother everyone called Uncle Dutch, I have no idea what his birth name was. Their brother Aleck had two daughters, my Aunt Doody (real name Edra Lee) and Aunt Bird (again, no idea what her birth certificate says)
Baffled by transphobes insisting that the name on your birth certificate is Your True Name Forever when it was common in my grandparents' generation to just...pick a name you like and use that, nbd. I literally found out both of my grandma's birth certificate first names FROM THEIR OBITUARIES.

Great thread. It echoes discussions 30-40 years ago on abortion - idea few people wanted a full ban, but many had "reasonable concerns" about safety, lax regulation, late TOPs, use as contraception, etc. so should be heard.

Nope. Aim was still restricting access. Outcomes matter. Intentions don't.

Some cis people, perhaps those with unconscious transphobia, think we can't apply the term trans to a child until they are mature enough to make a competent decision, or until they have been psychiatrically assessed & diagnosed.

They think it is better to avoid that word for children.

The point at which a child speaks up, asks for support, asks to transition, even if that is phrased as a 'maybe' or as a 'question', is often far beyond the point of 'questioning'.

Conversion practitioners are trying really hard to keep trans children stuck at a point of 'gender questioning'.

We also know, as academics & researchers, that the period in which any child is 'gender questioning' is very often on their own, in silence, months or even years before they speak the words to a single other person.

We do not know which children around us are 'questioning' their gender.

Current efforts of conversion pressure and societal oppression are being targeted very directly at trans children.

We do them no service by adopting anti-trans language of 'gender questioning children'.

If you want to know what's best for trans kids, ask the people who used to be them, it's that simple.

A vote to ban trans healthcare for minors is a vote for dead kids.

Part of the reason a lot of rural America votes red is because entire counties are owned by just a few families, so they can use that influence to sway the politics. Your employer is the cousin of your landlord is the cousin of your banker, and they have the power to cut you off if you don't comply.
