Niko Stratis has written beautifully about how powerful and personal it is to make a mix for someone in her book The Dad Rock That Made Me A Woman. She understands better than any other writer that in making a mix for someone you love, you aren't just sharing the songs; you're plotting out your feelings along a new vector, maybe the most important vector for those of us who cherish music obsessively. You have already loved this person for so long, and a mix CD—often a gift you give in the early stages of a relationship—is an externalization of that love. Those of us who have loved a lot of people and therefore given a lot of mix CDs as gifts know there's nothing casual about it, though one convention of giving someone a mix is that you have to act like it doesn't matter and you maybe don't even look at them when you hand it to them. Traditionally, your attitude should convey that you spent nine seconds on it and you don't care whether they like it. Meanwhile, you're screaming internally PUT MY FAVORITE MUSIC INSIDE YOU AND BECOME ONE WITH ME.

Tim’s work, especially on ITYSL but definitely on The Chair Factory so far, also has this interesting note where every time someone cusses it feels like it’s coming out of the mouth of a 10yo. It feels more jarring than when adults cuss but the clunkiness makes it its own joke.

Watched The Chair Factory and I’m sure a lot of people have already talked about how Tim Robinson’s work feels especially appealing to neurodivergent people who can laugh at themselves. The Chair Factory definitely continues the tradition of a one-track mind going to extremes.

I told him I got out before things got too bad and he smiled, and then he went to cracking jokes because he’d heard about how Floridians have hurricane parties. Transaction finished just fine and we both left smiling.

Maybe he hadn’t dealt with many trans people before, but he saw I’m harmless.
