My house has a new familiar. If you are near 39th and Holgate in Portland and missing a delightful black kitty, this guy or gal seems to clearly come from a home and is also desperate for food and shelter

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

you have to imagine that this probably also happens when there doesn't happen to be a Herald reporter randomly sitting there to see it happen
"A Miami Herald reporter witnessed the agents forcefully removing Dayana — who is 4-feet, 11-inches tall and weighs 85 pounds — from her white Toyota Corolla. The footage shows Dayana yelling at the reporter to help her and that she was a United States citizen"
only a bit above the paywall but you get the horrible gist www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...

"Kavanaugh Stop" went from a skeet on here to Bluesky meme to crosspollinating over on X to Brett Kavanaugh's burner account seeing it there to a whiny defensive footnote about it in a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Juice.
Check out the Kavanaugh FN 4; I think it's pretty clear that the Kavanaugh Stop thing has gotten to him:

The people who profited most from the cancel culture/free speech panic were less interested in actual freedom of speech than establishing their own control over public discourse. You don't even have to take my word for it. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

I mentioned before how fucking surreal it is that basically all of these sex pests *confessed to this shit* regularly on Howard Stern in the 90's, over a quarter century ago.

They were literally telling an audience of millions of people, live on air, what heinous shit they were up to.

This is totally underreported. Trump is not just going after "illegals." He's going after people who were here legally, by changing their status.

These are people who entered the US the right way, and never broke a law. Now they are subject to Trump's whim, his ICE goons, and inhuman detention.
Trump has revoked legal status for at least 1.6 million immigrants over the past year by cancelling programs like TPS and student visas.

Remember: these are people who entered the country legally.

Trump never cared about “legal immigration" — just inflicting cruelty.

The idea that if you love to write, you should get work writing. This is OFTEN true, but many people will be happier if writing is their fun emotional outlet instead of a job. Writing for work can be gruelling and marathon-esque and a love of the art does not translate to a propensity for the work.

This is utterly lovely. There are so many reasons people skate, and so many types of people at every rink. Being invited into that kind of hyper-local community for a day is a bit of magic.

(Also: I wish the rink I skate at had a fireplace!!)
Last month, @outsidemag.bsky.social sent me to spend 14 hours in a suburban ice rink, learning the stories of everyone I met. Why do they skate? I asked. To feel free, they told me. To feel God. To forget, for a minute, what they've done.
What I Learned After Spending 14 Hours at a Suburban Ice Rink
A full day inside a suburban rink revealed how one place can hold ambition, grief, faith, and escape—sometimes all at once.

Using the word “faith” as a synonym for religion, which so many people do without even thinking, reifies a post-Enlightenment culturally Protestant idea of what constitutes religion.

it’s kinda depressing how every trans person knows that the TA was specifically targeted for being trans and most cis people will never hear about it because most news at most mention that she is trans in passing
I heard about this story before but this is the first time I've heard any mention of the TA being transgender. It sucks that it went this far when it was determined early that she was simply a scrappy writer who didn't follow instructions, the TA was probably just sick of her.

If you read enough hagiographical work about very specific men gamers in the 1970s and couple it with a lifetime of people dismissing your (freeform larp / "storygame" / Erzählspiel) game tradition as "not really games" in part due to their community's gender, then you see where I'm coming from.
Indeed. The purchaseable *product* we call the TTRPG begins in the 1970s with Western Gunfight, Chainmail, and D&D.

Yet role-playing "parlor games," simulations, and similar are centuries old and draw from a well that resembles all the positive stuff about D&D.

Parlor games were feminized...
