We never really ‘survived’ the flu pandemic because we emerged as something completely different. People didn’t come to grips with the 100 years ago and it left us woefully unprepared to understand the cultural response to covid and its sequelae.

Explosions in dense urban centers! Another great idea /s
According to King County Metro there is a tree lighting AND fireworks event tonight downtown. FIREWORKS? Is this new? Am I just *that* out of it? Either way I do not plan on being downtown for these shenanigans.

I wrote about Oura's security and privacy practices earlier this year for this.weekinsecurity.com, and found:

• Oura rings *don't* end-to-end encrypt users' health data;
• Oura *can* access its users' data;
• Oura told me that the company *has* received U.S. government demands for users' data.

The shitty thing is that as sleep trackers go, the hardware on the Oura is one of the most convenient, least obtrusive options… but they can’t just make a decent product, they have to stuff their app with absolute crap that makes it borderline unusable.

The pattern of Harrell using the Mayor's office to boost his campaign is clear as day for anyone who wants to look.

Oh no. It gets worse. Not only do folks trying to replace a Rad Power battery included in the CPSC safety warning need to buy a replacement since Rad refused a recall, the new batteries also require a new charger, sold separately for another $60.
RadPower's product page for the Safe Shield battery says "Safe Shield batteries are compatible only with our updated Rad charger (sold separately). Warning: Do not use with older Rad Power Bikes chargers or any third-party or aftermarket chargers."

The extremely shitty budget where Harrell does some weird things to “balance” the budget — but teetering on the edge of a fiscal cliff set to screw us as soon as he’s out of office!
After an absolute barrage of official press releases leading up to the election (an average of one per weekday between October 1 and November 3), Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell just broke his official silence for the third time in the three weeks since the election, announcing he's signed the budget.
Mayor Harrell Signs City of Seattle’s 2026 Budget into Law  - Office of the Mayor
Seattle – This week, Mayor Bruce Harrell signed the City of Seattle’s 2026 budget into law, totaling $8.9 billion in appropriations overall and $2.0 billion toward General Fund priorities.  Passed una...

The team also signals a change in focus on transportation. Harrell, who worked to undo progress against traffic deaths by blocking safety projects, had no safety advocates on his team. Wilson has leaders from 350 Seattle, Duwamish River Community Coalition, and the Disability Mobility Initiative.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

These two sweeties need a new foster home by December 12th. One boy, one girl, both fixed. They’ll come with food, toys, and litter (also a cat playpen if you want it).

Would really appreciate any shares to cast a wider net.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that in response to my pointing out that “just buy pants with bigger pockets” is an absurd suggestion to handle cell phone size creep, that someone replied trying to recommend specific pants. 😑
And I should buy bigger hands too, I suppose?

Cat is hitting on a very real point, here. Honestly, my gut instinct is that this is part of what happens when shame is outlawed as an acceptable emotion to feel

Tech doesn't *have* shame, and its workers are forbidden from feeling it. Ergo, anything shameful cannot be tech.

But DOGE is shameful!
There actually has not been enough reflection in the tech community about DOGE
