I almost forgot! Additional to that, the zeon specs have improved as well by the end meaning he couldn't rely on the gundams abilities by that point even if he wanted too, its his piloting that is keeping him in the game and the coating just serves to physically prove it
In the very first episode Amuro says he was saved by the gundams abilities. Its shown that in his first few fights he relies heavily on being tougher and faster to win. However by the end of the series he has improved so much, they need to upgrade the gundam just to keep up with him. Its well done
