Recent events have gotten me thinking about how I've started to call the process of categorizing broad ideas of play (narrativist/gameist/simulationist to name a few) as "Gamer Astrology" or "Gamer Phrenology" if i'm being unkind.

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.

The Bullet Dancer focuses on area denial thanks to its unique mechanic: placing delayed AOEs which only go off when it starts its next turn, better start matching its tempo if you don't want to be riddled with bullets.

Something I think gets missed is that because the choice of sparing is there, the game forces you to confront making a choice, you cannot simply say you picked execution for optimization reasons, that's now a character choice, they now both have narrative weight and resonance, ideally.

I don't know if this is just my perception but sometimes it feels like it's getting harder over time to communicate subtext through games. Too many nerds are so brain-broken by hypercapitalist "efficiency" grindset shit that they become incapable of questioning the systems they live within
writing an important and tense point of character decision making into the game only to have people dismiss the empathetic option as pointless, thereby completely affirming the entire point of this decision being in the game.
