Important on "forestall" -- not every project actually fully fixed the issue! Many of them just kind of patched things to work around it, where it'll become the 2038 problem. I hope that by THEN they'd have actually addressed it internally, but...

From 1997 to the end of 1999, my dad was able to earn over 10k a month running projects to rewrite code ahead of the year 2000 to forestall the Y2K problem.

one theory I have is that the AI craze is causing a cultural shift in tech leadership where LLM's and the associated tech are normalizing stuff not really working properly, and standards are plummeting across the board
