Among so many reasons to feel hopeful in recent days, yesterday the center-left Socialist beat the extreme-right candidate in Portugal's presidential election in a record-breaking landslide.

"Bomb them until they cry Uncle," has been tried many, many times over the last 115 years of flight. We know what happens, and hate and unity is the first and longest stage.
The suggestion by Tom Homan that the ICE surge will continue until the mayor and governor "get the message out" to their constituents (the "agitators") to stand down, misunderstands why federal agents are now so widely despised in the Twin Cities.

EXCLUSIVE: US border czar says ICE surge could end in ‘a couple weeks’
U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan says he was sent to Minnesota by President Trump to reduce the tension in Minnesota and oversee an orderly transition from a “surge” of immigration enforcement to more…

A poll of electorate view of whether ICE is doing too much, about right, or not enough. The "not enough" number for Republicans is 27%, right on the ride-or-die percentage of sworn Trumpers.

Poll: Two-thirds of Americans say ICE has 'gone too far' in immigration enforcement
A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll finds a jump in disapproval of the agency among Democrats and independents, but Republicans are standing by ICE and the president.

I taught a class on “hope” last year and the few theorists who’ve written on it all point out that hope is the harder choice - that despair is easy and too often fashionable
Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

I'm so mad at the decisions leadership made. I, a person in Minneapolis, used to subscribe, before they surrendered. What a fucking tragedy.

That means ~815k Minnesotans participated in the shutdown and ~310k in the strike. That would make Minnesota’s January 23 general strike one of the largest in history.
A new poll finds that 1 in 4 Minnesota voters took part in the Jan 23 shutdown against ICE, or have a loved one who did. Of those, 38% DID NOT WORK, either because they made the choice to stay out, or their workplaces closed. By me, @thomasbirm.bsky.social, @bloomekatz.bsky.social

My weird career trajectory was right there in college in seed crystal form. The procedural mind for CompSci work, while also a head for people-systems.
I was way too white for Lit of India, and didn't learn what I should.
I was the only CompSci student who enjoyed the ethics class.
We went to Toy Story as a class field-trip and dissected all the CG artifacts afterwards.
I made a whole fucking career out of practical Parallel Computing.

Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:

1. Literature of India
2. Ethical Systems
3. Intro physics
4. Computer Graphics (Toy Story 1 released during that class)
5. Parallel computing

I'm seeing calls for another general strike this Friday, but I'm NOT seeing labor federation buy-in. That was CRITICAL to making Minnesota's strike last week work. Critical.

A number of responders were quite opposed to the idea of giving ridealongs to The Atlantic (I understand their frustration with the outlet).

But I drove these guys around for two hours and they witnessed abductions, confrontations with the public, tear-gassings.

The lesson: let the world see.
The Atlantic Magazine just dropped a tremendous story on the Minnesota Resistance. The author is a war correspondent & sees the echoes of leaderless community empowerment around the globe: www.theatlantic.com/politics/202... (supposed to be a gift link, might not work, it’s in Apple News, too.)
