Has anyone discussed how those cheap releases of TV shows on DVD are re-encoded garbage that fits on a single layer DVD and has a bunch of errors, making some episodes unplayable? I mean, besides the guy on YouTube.

I guess the future of American politics was always going to be Instagram models in Texas spouting ethnic cleansing rhetoric
Valentina Gomez announced her run for Texas’ 31st Congressional District with one of the most vile racist messages I’ve ever seen:

“Vote for me so we can kick every dirty Muslim out of Texas.
Save your daughters from getting ra**d by Muhammad”

We made adding machines so smart they can’t even add any more.
I find Spotify's year-end "Wrapped" round-up fascinating, because it's been wildly wrong for me every year. My "Number 1" artist this year is a singer who I listened to one song by, once (one of my kids told me about it, so I looked it up).

One song. Once.

The algorithm must be a doozy.

Isn’t the thing about the USA that if someone is trying to kill you you’re allowed to meet them with deadly force to protect yourself? Did anyone write that down anywhere?

If new proposals detailed in an FDA memo are put into place, experts told me it would mean the end of annual flu shots. And end of most vaccines for pregnant people. And maybe the end of updates to pneumonia vaccines. And more.

Every so often I am asked to talk to people outside the US about what DOGE did. People are broadly interested in the idea of tech and disruption in government because of a broad frustration with government. But then when you explain the details they are pretty horrified.
We had at one point similar sentiments being voiced here in the UK, i.e. various Labour people saying 'we should use Trump/DOGE means for Labour ends' and well...
There is such a thirst in some progressive centrist circles that they will look at the Trump administration as a model to get things done. I think its worth addressing the argument. This is from Mark Dunkelman, author of the widely praised "Why Nothing Works."

A thread well worth reading, and bookmarking to check periodically for updates.
I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world.

This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

Hold up a fuckin iPad. Show him the news. If he’s gonna act like a baby, treat him like one.
But no, not a damn reporter there wants to have to move back home after losing their job by doing what used to be their job. lol. Be serious.
Gumption? That’s so 20th century.
Not joking: has one reporter responded to his preposterous Sgt Schultz “I know nothing” schtick by immediately asking:

* Doesn’t this level of ignorance disqualify you as speaker?

* Do you really think we are so dumb to believe you?

* Do you think it is appropriate to insult the voters like this?
RAJU: If defenseless survivors were killed, would that constitute a violation of the laws of war?

MIKE JOHNSON: I'm not going to prejudge any of that. I was pretty busy yesterday. I didn't follow a lot of the news.
