you can find things to quibble with in every Francis piece, but I picked this one to share because I feel like everything everyone is saying about him boils down to this: he was a Jesuit, through & through. I'll remember the times he made the church feel just a little bit bigger, if not big enough.
Pope Francis, trailblazing Jesuit with a heart for the poor, dies at 88
When the cardinals voted to elect Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the 265th successor of St. Peter on the evening of March 13, 2013, few of them imagined what kind of pope he would be.

Pope Francis has died at 88.

His final message: a call for a Gaza ceasefire.

“This is cruelty. This is not war,” he said after Israel killed 7 children in Jabalia.

He called Gaza’s suffering “deplorable” — and made nightly calls to Christians trapped there.

Art Spiegelman: No, I thought Auschwitz was in bad taste.

it more “aggressive” to use the word “genocide” than to commit genocide.

The legal admission by DHS that it cannot actually unilaterally remove student non-immigrant status means every time a university informs a student that a SEVIS change by DHS means they must unenroll and leave the country, they are actively collaborating with a depraved regime.
Universities Told Students to Leave the Country. ICE Just Said They Didn’t Actually Have To.
When DHS erased students’ database records, universities said they had to leave. An ICE court filing says the students still had status.

I do not expect universities to ever stand up for their international students.
DHS has admitted in court it doesn’t have authority to terminate student non-immigrant status, even when it changes or terminates their SEVIS status, contrary to the info provided by unis to affected students.

This admission, a tactic to evade a lawsuit, is grounds for schools to defend students.

We have to demand that Boards of Trustees of universities, most of whom are not academics, scholars, doctors, scientists, and so on, be composed of at least half of such people. Are there comparable situations where Boards of organizations are people who don't do what that organization does?
