Looks like the 5 hour pacer was a casualty by the Elk's Memorial which is pretty early in the Chicago Marathon. Maybe around the 4 mile mark.

Delighted to find out after the fact that Blue Cross Blue Shield is no longer covering the full cost of blood tests. This is a new Republican cutback in coverage allowing insurance companies to no longer fully cover what is obviously important preventative medicine.

The day I got the longspur & bunting flock I also got a northern harrier, long eared owl, short eared owl, bald eagle and a red-tailed hawk when I was almost home. It was during a polar vortex so those sightings were earned through proper Chicago winter punishment!

What for algae piles on the public beach caused by northerly winds. The longspurs, bunting and larks are fans. Also helps to go very early before dogwalkers spook the birds.

In Jan 2024 there was a big flock of them with a few snow buntings mixed in that spent a couple weeks in the former volleyball fields. I'm telling you this so you know you don't get the winter off from birding in Chicago. www.instagram.com/p/C2Q8XpRu6J3/

Yeah just hard when the prey is a bird that is quite rare in the particular location. I've seen 1 in the area in 5 years of intensive birding.
