I would also add that in nearby Mali a full on military government, allied with Wagner and observing roughly 0 rules of war, has utterly failed to put down an Islamist insurgency. We are not going to find a ‘shock & awe’ solution to the problem

That process started under the Kennedy Administration (and for really good reason); that system needed to die and couldn't be reformed. What Reagan did that's the **actual** problem is actually something entirely different, cutting funding to community MH centers that were supposed to make up for it

My intro political science classes freshman year of college began with (exactly as you say) "the definition of politics is who gets what and who has power in a society **and who does not**" all the way back in August 2002 (thanks Dr Parente). Upon consideration, that needs to be taught in 5th grade.

The old politicians understood something of the symbolism in politics and the power of appearance. Modern Democrats seem to disdain it, and that can come from a good place: treating voters like adults and politics as a material enterprise that's about making people's lives better.
