It's hard to describe how awful Piccadilly/Regent Street is this afternoon. Unbearable crowds crammed onto pavements while the roads are kept open for a tiny minority of drivers to ram through. @citywestminster.bsky.social and @london.gov.uk risking a lethal crush to keep a few Tesla twats happy.

Finally got around to setting up an email filter I think about every year. Any message containing "black friday" in the subject now goes directly to the bin.

Where doing public transport must take account of people travelling in groups. Public transport is sometimes competitive when travelling solo, but rarely in a group.
"Raising the cost of driving EVs discourages people from adopting the more sustainable option."

Cool, now do public transport.
It'd be cool if the "increasing the cost of motoring hurts poor people" people cared anything like as much about cost to people who rely on public transport - who are disproportionately likely to be poor and disabled, and who consistently face far greater increases in cost.

People talk shit about Gen X but only we respond with apoplectic rage to stuff like "your refrigerator is sending you a text" or "your desk lamp's AI would like access to your credit card data" instead of complete bafflement (previous generations) or grudging acceptance (subsequent generations)

Hmm. Well I often support the LibDems, but I think campaigning to reduce tax on large farms is an odd place to put their effort.
Budget Day is here: an important moment for households and businesses nationwide. Us Libs Dems are calling for the abolition of the Family Farm Tax & introduction of a British Farmers Rescue Plan. Agricultural businesses are the backbone of rural communities - supporting local farmers is essential.

Juries are not perfect.

Many of the worst miscarriages of justice have followed jury trials.

But the merit of juries is not so much the power they have, but the power they prevent others from having.

They mean a judge cannot just nod-along with prosecution evidence and give a guilty verdict.

Let me rewrite that for you: Rachel Reeves will keep fuel duty the same out of cowardice.
Since 2011 the fuel duty freeze has cost the Treasury £133 billion.

This huge amount could have paid for lower train and bus fares, better stations, safer walking, wheeling and cycling and much more!

Rachel Reeves will freeze fuel duty to dodge ‘political suicide’
The chancellor will also highlight a rise in the minimum wage and plans to cut energy bills as she tries to win over voters by focusing on cost of living

There's always money to subsidise driving more.
When can you declare an emergency over?

The 5p “emergency” petrol tax cut was introduced in March 2022, to offset a spike in prices

They are now about 30p down on that month, & about 50p down on the absolute peak

This is why we are campaigning to end pavement parking.

Eleanor Powell was the only dancer to intimidate Fred Astaire. Thrill to her tapping – and drumming – with Buddy Rich (and the Tommy Dorsey orchestra) in Ship Ahoy. The ease, energy, wit, antics, acrobatics, athleticism: there was no-one like her.

Scrivener being good, as ever. Apple forces a GenAI prompt icon into their software on Mac, so they've put out a guide how to switch it off across the OS rather than risk people thinking they dabbled in GenAI in any way
Unlike most apps these days, Scrivener does not use AI in any way. However, if you’re on a Mac, you may see an AI prompt.

While people are splitting hairs over what a suitable commuting bike is (usually on the assumption that everyone's abilities, luggage & routes are broadly the same as their own), the salary sacrifice car scheme has no requirement for you to use it to commute or even that the lessee use it at all.
