I feel comfortable and secure in my belief that democratic leadership should not be pulling their slogans from venture capitalists. That this, at minimum, is a significant indictment of who they are listening and talking to. It’s not that complicated.
No value, no villain, no vision. Sounds like the tagline for the earnings call of a collapsing appliance retailer

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

One of the reasons I am not optimistic about the US in the medium term is that the right’s entire political project for the last fifty-ish years has been the destruction of civic virtue while hypocritically whining about the moral decay of society that they have been actively encouraging
The core problem is that in a state, something has to be sovereign - in a democracy, it is the people - and you can design and tinker as much as you like but there is no way to design around a loss of virtue in that sovereign entity.

If the people keep elected maniacs, no guardrails can hold.
one of the things dr schake and i were both wrestling with in this conversation--i think not really conclusively--is how you maintain the norm of civilian supremacy when the civilians are issuing objectively illegal, murderous orders

AI companies want to usurp creative work in a kind of digital 'enclosure of the commons.' The future of authentic human authorship depends on battling this tide.

Once again, Big Tech has proven itself to be a bad actor: breaching the law and exploiting talent for shareholder profit. (Props to Judge Wang for standing up for the rights of creative ownership!)

Donald Trump is explicitly ineligible to be president according to the black letter text of the 14th Amendment and BOTH emoluments clauses.

He is and always has been a fake president who was empowered by an illegitimate Supreme Court. This is the way.
Mass pardons are coming. There will be no accountability without treating those as null and void. And that means a future administration taking an official position that Trump is not the legitimate president right now because he is disqualified by the 14th Amendment. The two things are inextricable.

Media outlets would rather look like fools 99 times out of 100 than admit that Trump is not a normal president
this sorts of things get written for normal presidents so a steady production chain of them must be produced for the mad king president if the media wants to fool people into thinking the mad king is a normal president

Biden and Garland’s biggest mistake was failing to hold those responsible for all the crimes and corruption we saw from 2015 to 2021 accountable.

The next Democratic President can’t repeat this. We need a special counsel appointed on day 1 — and tribunals setup to judge war criminals.

I seriously doubt any Dem who doesn’t more or less openly advocate for the mass distribution of Louis Capet neckties is gonna get very far in the 2028 primary
It's going to get worse. He's going to get pardoned, others too. Getting public buy in on declaring all these void, the presidency effectively void, most of his actions void so they can be prosecuted is going to be a mammoth job(even if wine moms want blood!) Elite inertia to do nothing will be huge

I do strongly suspect that the pattern of hit jobs, and capitulations, is almost entirely explained by activists on university boards who want to collaborate with Trump against their own researchers and students.
