Conservatism is fundamentally a fan culture. It has lore and is invested in long-term character development and canonical debates within their ideological universe in ways that aren't quite the same among liberals or the left.

I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

the broad public does not like chaos and disorder and everything you can do to emphasize that it is the federal government that is responsible for chaos and disorder is a point in your favor. it’s classic nonviolent confrontation!

...why narratives of dwindling human autonomy are so often connected...to masculinist outbursts of 'regeneration through violence.' (from John Birch tactics to the work of the Unabomber and contemporary 'patriot' groups)" -Tim Melley 2/2

"This concept of the liberal individual...has long been celebrated in American political culture, particularly in the guise of 'rugged individualism' and atomistic 'self-reliance.' That these forms of individualism have masculine associations helps explain... 1/2

yea IMO i might just read tim melley's Empire of Conspiracy first. total masterpiece and very readable for an academic book
rhetoricpj.bsky.social
yea first blush i'd guess people applying tim melley's work to the growth of the fantasy genre
rhetoricpj.bsky.social
absolutely. and i think plenty of well-meaning (but thoroughly elitist) liberal actors and institutions confused the institutional monopolization of legal thought with "good politics" which meant they were carrying water for these...what's the term of art....ah yes sumbitches on the Right

i recall one time doing a literature review for a paper I was working on about rhetoric and the law and i was really shocked how deep i had to dig to find folks who acknowledged and plainly states that *the demos* has a role to play in constitutional interpretation

I read Caleb Nelson's piece on the removal power and I was taken with a reference he makes in the conclusion.
When the First Congress confronted the same ambiguities, more than one member warned against interpreting the Constitution in the expectation that all Presidents would have the sterling character of George Washington. The current Supreme Court may likewise see itself as interpreting the Constitution for the ages, and perhaps some of the Justices take comfort in the idea that future Presidents will not all have the character of Donald Trump. But the future is not guaranteed; a President bent on vengeful, destructive, and lawless behavior can do lasting damage to our norms and institutions. As one member of Congress argued in 1789, we should not gravitate toward interpretations of the Constitution that “legaliz[e] the full exertion of a tyrannical disposition.”

Yeah, this was in Dallas in the late 90s, but we had 4 armed men come in with real unloaded guns, and take a few of us aside. Said they were here to kill believers, and asked if we were believers. After we all said "Yes", they unmasked themselves as dads from church.
