With Trump once again blaming Black cities for "voter fraud," it's worth revisiting our piece about why this is a playbook as old as the nation --- and how it makes these accusations more believable to Whites:

Essential reading.
More or less vindicates the theory of Janine Wiedel's Shadow Elite that neoliberalism was post soviet corruption (that we built!) returning to the Metropole.

Also vindicates my theory that we have been dealing with a bipartisan, radicalised Anglo elite for at least a decade.

The main divergence on Bluesky today is cognitive (about the degree of political risk), not affective.
Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

Bannon did jail time for contempt of Congress in an investigation about his role in an armed insurrection. Breeziness about these people got us where we are

There are a lot of people commenting on the practicalities of this. But the floating of the intention is enough to indicate they don’t consent to the rules of the game. The Republican Party is no longer democratic

I do try but it is very hard to be confident that our current political economy can support the material conditions for democracy anymore without a catastrophic shock to wealth stocks
No, I do not want to be a “creator journalist” or “influencer” or run a newsletter by myself

I want health insurance and a decent editor to work under and a team of comrades to work with, attend union meetings with, do good with

“In my profession, I have seen many people break down in grief, but that image of Elizabeth’s father will stay with me forever,” she said. “I watched him sit in his car, bury his head in his hands, and cry uncontrollably. Those are images you do not forget.”
Elizabeth is a Columbia Heights fourth-grader who loves volleyball, learning English and giggling in the halls with her friends. She's been held in the Dilley Immigration Processing Center for nearly a month, and she and her mom have both fallen ill. sahanjournal.com/education/co...

I don't know if non-lawyers understand how insane this statement is. I honestly can't think of anything remotely comparable in non-lawyer speak. I guess the closest would be a surgeon saying "Imagine if I had to wash my HANDS before doing surgery!"
Mike Johnson speaks out against the use of judicial warrants in immigration cases:

"Imagine if we had to go through the process of getting a judicial warrant"

Many said we were exaggerating a year ago when we argued that Trump is a clear and present danger to our democracy. A year later they are eating their words.

It’s up to every single one of us to save our democracy.

The basic lesson of the Second World War was that democracy requires a cordon sanitaire and US institutions could not enforce ours and now we are on a step function toward authoritarian hell until that barrier is restored

It’s extremely bad for the prospects of our democracy that the sole small-d democratic party has an incentive to keep a fascist party held only just in abeyance instead of casting it permanently outside the bounds of legitimate politics
It really bums me out that Klobuchar, who was instrumental in normalizing Trump as just another political adversary, is almost certainly going to be the next governor of Minnesota, a state currently paying a severe price for that normalization of fascism.
Here's all the Klobuchar v. Republican matchups from that SurveyUSA poll

Best Klobuchar lead is +20, worst is +14

In fact eroticized exploitation, abuse, domination, and violence are in fact normative parts of male heterosexuality—they’re largely constitutive of how men define themselves as men. The big feminist and queer intervention in sexual politics has been to say that this is corrosive and unnecessary.

For years, I have argued that memories of Reconstruction & Civil Rights made Dems plump for an ever-more-powerful Federal Govt, but this is risky for Dems not just because of the structure of US electoral institutions but even of US opinions. The Broligarchs are products of unprecendented prosperity--largely in tech, largely funded by the American taxpayer via NSF grants, federal contracts, etc.--which they used to fund state capture.
They bought & neutered democratic institutions (Congress, the IRS & FTC) that constrained them.
