BIG personal / @bikeeastbay.bsky.social:

I'm stepping up into the role of Bike East Bay Co-Executive Director of Development and Engagement.

I'm thrilled to join Co-EDs Jill Holloway & Justin Hu-Nguyen in leading our efforts to make the East Bay a place where people come first, not cars!
Excited for SweaterFest, and especially to bring my daughter, since she finally has a BART holiday sweater (this is the first year they’ve offered kid sizes).

Haven’t gotten your sweater yet? You still can: www.railgoods.com
CALLING ALL HOLIDAY TRANSIT PALS! SweaterFest will be held from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The free, family-friendly event will have some new activities this year, including rides on the BARTmobile through a whimsical winter wonderland, as well as some only-at-SweaterFest exclusives.

Tomorrow is #BlackFridayParking!

Join us in highlighting why costly mandatory parking requirements are unnecessary by showcasing all the excess parking on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Take some pics and post them with the #BlackFridayParking tag!

Black Friday Parking - Parking Reform Network
The idea is simple: showcase that even on the busiest shopping day of the year, plenty of parking spaces remain unused, supposedly when demand is at its peak.

Devastating.

Senator Faith Winter was a fierce advocate for transit, the environment, and families. I was lucky to get know Faith and learn from her through the Young Elected Officials Network.

She was nearly killed two years ago while biking.

And now traffic violence has claimed her life. 💔

I lived nearby in Oakland for 8 years and found this crossing terrifying. I waited, often a long time, for a break in traffic because cars did not stop for folks walking.

So glad it’s been significantly improved and appreciate my @bikeeastbay.bsky.social coworker Robert for making this happen!
Last year Piedmont was working on a pedestrian crossing upgrade at Grand/Linda. I was able to get involved & work with staff to upgrade it w bike left turn features as well, including a curbside waiting space & flashing beacon push button oriented to the street.

Our neighbors to our north are building more homes at one of their BART stations! Looking forward to North Berkeley BART housing breaking ground soon as well.
I’ve never been so excited to see fencing!

Construction is beginning on El Cerrito Plaza BART TOD, replacing parking with 743 homes and hopefully a new library.

The first building will be 100% affordable with 70 homes.

I’ve been working on this project for nearly a decade and couldn’t be happier.

I’m grateful for El Cerrito City staff. ❤️

On Sunday my family and I noticed a staircase railing at Tassajara Park was very loose and a bit hazardous.

I told staff about it on Monday morning... and it was fixed 4 hours later!

El Cerrito staff care so much and work so hard for our community.

Another end of a transit card era!

The question is - will @mta.info have a MetroCard fashion show to rival @bart.gov’s?

What’s depressing isn’t the higher levels of federal expenditures & DOGE’s failure—it’s that the feds replaced expenditures on foreign assistance, research & the environment with spending on ICE personnel & national guard deployments.

Meanwhile, the rich got tax cuts so the deficit worsened.

Love seeing BART so crowded at nearly 11 pm in Berkeley.

I love El Cerrito ❤️

Today my daughter and I went for an Ohlone Greenway scooter ride/walk and along the way:

🚴🏼‍♀️Ran into several people we know

🚶🏼‍♀️Met a family that lives 2 blocks from us

🐕Pet 3 dogs

📚Got books at the library

🪾And my daughter climbed 3 trees and rode her favorite swing.

Wanna stick it to Trump and live up to the Paris Accords, California? Stop driving so much *and* tell your city council's to build bus and bike lanes instead of throwing away money on car infrastructure.

every traffic death is a policy choice
Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

The first time I visited Berkeley, the Telegraph Fair was happening.

I loved it & thought Telegraph was car free and filled with street vendors all the time.

I was disappointed when I found out it wasn’t permanent.

So glad the festival will continue & look forward to a future car free Telegraph.
Big news for #Berkeley: Councilmember @cecilialunaparra.bsky.social and @mayoradenaishii.bsky.social have successfully worked with the Fire Department and other city staff to keep the Telegraph Ave street fair on Telegraph!

Come visit in December!

West Contra Costa teachers deserve a fair contract!

My family and I have been rallying with teachers every Friday for the past two months at Madera Elementary.

Negotiations have stalled and teachers on the verge of a strike. It was so heartening to see the biggest turnout of families yet today!

That is a completely unacceptable level of availability for transit vehicles. If BART cars had this awful level of availability, it would be front page news and folks would be furious.

Electric buses are great... if they work.

But if they erode service, they're harming the climate, not helping it.
*As a group,* the four BEB's purchased in 2018 have 35% availability - at least one bus ran on this route on 35% of service days.
The four BEB's purchased in 2016 have 42% availability

Availability levels for the individual buses ranges from 2-25%

On Monday evening a driver hit a person cycling across Central on the Ohlone Greenway, despite the automatic flashing lights when someone crosses.

People walking and biking use this crossing a lot, as it connects to El Cerrito Plaza BART station.

We must slow car traffic to protect lives.

Like Uber, AVs have the upside of reducing parking demand. Downside: big increase in Vehicle Miles Traveled and traffic -- including lots of miles driving empty
Almost half the Waymos on California streets are driving around empty. They're either waiting for the next customer or en route for a pickup.

If robotaxis scale, anything close to that level of deadheading would create crushing gridlock.

This would be a huge loss! I can’t imagine the East Bay without the steam train.

The current month to month lease makes it impossible for the operators to make long term needed investments.

Urge East Bay Regional Park District to approve a long-term lease, by emailing [email protected].

A lovely musical interlude on my BART ride home.

I see these musicians frequently in the evening on the Red Line in the East Bay.

Music on transit brings me so much joy. ❤️🎶🚄

On Saturday a 70 year old woman walking across San Pablo Avenue was hit by a driver.

Due to the severity of her injuries she was airlifted to a trauma hospital for medical care and is in critical condition.

San Pablo is El Cerrito’s most dangerous street. We must make it safer to protect lives.

Not just Whole Foods. Every time my coworker picks up large orders from Office Depot she indicates in the app that she’s picking up by bike, and always a worker comes out to check, not believing her bike can carry the order.

Then they see her Urban Arrow, with big carrying capacity, and understand.
Apparently Whole Foods has never heard of someone picking up groceries on a bicycle

Close Telegraph to cars immediately!

Berkeley voted years ago to close it by rebuilding the street, but it can be closed to cars immediately with plastic posts and signs

Safety can't wait any longer

How many more deaths of people walking and biking will we tolerate before we make our streets safer?

This is a crisis throughout the East Bay - a woman was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing an Antioch street yesterday.

We need to rapidly transform our streets to slow cars and protect people.
