Our comments on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's "Oakland for All" vision plan.

Oakland needs a concrete plan, and responsible team, for delivering improvements to avoid repeating its past failures to develop housing and infrastructure throughout the city eastbayforeveryone.org/2025/08/20/o...

We have hundreds of California four-lane roads to upgrade to meet our mode shift goals.

1) Why does a local agency like ACTC have to lead design for these projects, when that'll mean it's always their first time?

2) Why are we making them design concrete mixes and traffic circles from scratch?

Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

Oakland, unlike peer cities in the region, does not appear to have a written procurement conflict of interest policy. That makes it much harder for the City Admin and City Attorney to police influence peddling and corruption for public works when firms inappropriately lobby staff and Councilmembers.

Transit Signal Priority is an umbrella term for multiple strategies that reduce delays for transit vehicles at signalized intersections, potentially down to zero.

Here, I'm comparing the trade-offs between a "French-style" and an "in-phase" TSP strategy, more common in North America.

“The new timetable assumes each bus will spend nearly 45% of its runtime idling at BART (or about 6.2 hours of a 14 hour shift).

It is hard to escape the conclusion that the timetable is being designed around the limitations of the aging [BEB] capacity.”

Fun facts about the County's #4 buses:

- the battery is the same size as a 2025 Tesla Model X
- the drivers do not let the charge level fall below 70%

After 42 years, Berkeley is kicking street festivals off of Telegraph Ave. because the fire department has decided on a new, stricter interpretation of the fire code that does not allow 26-ft. fire lanes required next to buildings of 30+ ft. to be blocked even by a street festival

I couldn’t interest anybody in NYC in the details of our $1+ billion effort, but you guys have some really top-notch gadflies in Oakland, so it is worth looking into the mechanics of how corners are being chosen, how much it will balloon, whether it’s all truly necessary, and what could be changed
