borders are among the worst things humanity has ever invented. the idea that all land must belong to someone and that your worth as a person is determined by which land you’re born on is just flagrantly absurd.
I’m sick with a cold so I can’t articulate it well right now, but I keep thinking about this moment from the borders panel at Socialism 2025, where one panelist said, we have got to stop letting ourselves and our actions be defined and circumscribed by these imaginary lines

Any DoJ attorney who participates in this investigation should suffer professional and social shunning that makes it effectively impossible to continue to work as an attorney.

Has anyone seen any actual evidence that the @mnaflcio.org has actually called for a general strike next Friday? There's nothing on their social media or website to indicate it.

every single successful general strike in US history has had union backing through the local AFL-CIO

this is the first time it’s been called for since the 1940s

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

I get the debate over the legitimacy of Bivens, and whether Erie was right to make the enactment of a Bivens-like remedy something that Congress has to do. But whatever the answers to that, it sure would be useful to have a civil remedy for federal Fourth Amendment violations.

Any reason why the rest of us shouldn't be joining them?
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

My favorite Twitter prompt was "RT this with your home river," so reskeet this with your home river.

One thing we have to recon with as a nation is despite the law, what politicians say, what judges have ruled, and generational affirmations/revaltions—there has never been a moment in U.S. history where people left of center could practice politics or protest without being surveilled.
Today, in a message shared w me from a law-enforcement-only forum, a sheriff’s detective says he was tasked with monitoring OSINT ahead of an ICE protest and is crowdsourcing activist “groups and specific channels” to track from other cops nationwide

If the DEA had killed 80 innocent Americans in the course of apprehending one drug dealer, there would be riots. But we are so ghoulishly indifferent to the lives and humanity of people abroad that it's barely even part of the conversation.
A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

Isn't it odd that the United States has enough money to suddenly run Venezuela, but not enough to run our own country?

There is always cash in the piggy bank for bombs to kill people, but never for healthcare to keep them alive.

This is an abomination.
Congress should stop this.

Also, if Trump wants to enjoy an imitation of the Arc de Triomphe done in a style and at a place congenial to him, he can visit the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang, completed in 1982.

Fun thread, and also somehow I missed that I hadn't been following @annleckie.com until now, so that's fixed!
This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

Please let me tell you about these fine video games!!
