Author, novel Western Motel (pub. Scribner’s Atheneum, as Polly Gross), stories, a pair of thrillers. Event biz vet, film fan. Chicago South Sider on the Gulf. Yes, that Gulf.

From my new novel…

Mandee, the dim-witted dispatcher: “I’m smizing right now. Cool, huh?” Liquor czar “Lippy” Lipowitz: “On the nose, you’ll get hints of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and toasted oak.” C-Note, the hip hop producer: “Where I sit, that is the head of the table.”
This is me. Make my own turkey broth with the giblets, use it for the sausage stuffing and—with that neck meat!—for the gravy. Turkey skin so crisp it snaps, crackles, and pops. It’s a fine meal.
As for me and my house, we will serve turkey with perfectly crispy skin, sausage and bread stuffing cooked inside the bird (despite my brother working for cooperative extension), and a veritable ocean of homemade gravy.

The whole POINT of Thanksgiving is stuffing and gravy. You can’t stuff a ham.

Countries with DEI and abortion are human rights violators, says country where armed and masked government forces are invading neighborhoods.
"Countries with state subsidies for abortion, transgender-friendly policies for children, hate speech laws and affirmative action policies will now be considered to be violating human rights under rules imposed at the [US] State Department..."

Flawed character, redemption arc—all of this works well for stories about men with cool careers (lawyer, fixer, getaway driver, etc.). Women have to work harder for grace, just as they do for gold.

A rule of thumb for writing clarity:

“Handout” is a noun. “Hand out” is a verb phrase.

“Read the handout.”
“I’ll hand out the gifts.”

Same with rollout and roll out, breakdown and break down, and—please—“standby” and “stand by.”

“They put me on standby.”
“I’m Wolf Blitzer … stand by!”

I mean, look, I'm not a reporter, so who am I to talk?

But on a day where the president both just called a woman reporter "Piggy" and is celebrating someone who had people bone saw apart one of my colleagues, I might just be a little ready to defend my colleagues and profession.

But that's just me

“The media’s desire to sedate its audience is evidenced by NBC News’ new slogan: “Facts. Clarity. Calm.” This is not the time to be calm. This is the time to be scared enough to defend our democracy.” —M. Jacob
When Trump posted an AI video of himself flying a jet and bombing Americans with feces, the media decided it was no big deal. Why? Because he’s been bombing us with feces for a decade, and the media are used to it.
