2025 book thread 📚

For the past 7-8 years I've did a thread of all the books I read in a year on tge bird app, this year I'm going to post here and there.

My goal is 50 books as I read 49 last year. I'm reading a lot more comics right now and may post those alongside the books.

Book #60: We Sold Our Souls - Grady Hendrix #BookSky

This is a really unique concept that takes the idea of a contract with a demon super literally. Once again I find myself wishing some fictional bands were real. Great characters and an engaging plot. Will read more by this author.

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
Book #59: Before the Coffee Gets Cold - Toshikazu Kawaguchi (BtCGC #1) #BookSky

On my list for years, finally picked up for a Goodreads achievement. Good, but has to be looked at through a Japanese lens, the characters feel very conservative for Western ideals. Unique time travel idea

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Book #58: Listen for the Lie - Amy Tintera #BookSky

Picked up for a Goodreads challenge and absolutely loved it! Listened as an audiobook which was the right move I think as the story is told partly through a podcast. Reminds me of Sadie by Courtney Summers. Very good and twisty

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Book #57: The Eyes are the Best Part - Monika Kim #BookSky

This was extremely weird but I enjoyed it. Begins as a family drama, exploring themes of racism and misogyny but takes off in the second half. All the men are terrible. A very unique & gory revenge story, not everyone's thing

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Book #56: Recursion - Blake Crouch #BookSky

Really interesting premise, a time travel story with a twist. I appreciated that the story considered the real world implications of time travel. The characters felt well developed also, very good overall. I'll read more by this author

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Book #55: My Dark Vanessa - Kate Elizabeth Russell #BookSky

Been on my TBR for years, tough read but very good. It was interesting to be with Vanessa on her journey of processing her grooming and assault. I empathised with her a lot, she needs a hug and a support system

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
It was a nice way to link the plot lines together. The story starts in the mid 1950s when a murder has just occurred, then flashes back to different women telling stories of the past. And the house sort of introduces the next character to be focused on
Book #54: The Briar Club - Kate Quinn #BookSky

Kate Quinn is one of my absolute favourites and I'll read anything she writes. I really enjoyed this, felt different from her others in a good way. Using a sentient house as a framing device was definitely a choice, great book overall

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #53: Queenie - Candice Carty-Williams #BookSky

Really unique story about generational trauma, modern racism, and healing. I really felt for Queenie throughout and her ex boyfriend was terrible to her. No one should put up with a man who won't stand up for you.

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
Book #52: Frankenstein - Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley #BookSky

Another classic ticked off, really enjoyed this. It wasn't quite what I expected, more philosophical and the creation of the creature is a very small part of the novel. Reflects the fears and anxieties of its time

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
Book #51: Gulp - Mary Roach #BookSky

I don't usually read non-fiction but this sounded interesting, I was right. Scientific but also funny, felt more like a series of stories rather than a science book. Learned some interesting things that will probably never come up in real life

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
Book #50: Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo (SoC #1) #BookSky

Wish I'd read this years ago when my tolerance for teenage nonsense was higher, I'd have liked it more. Cool plot but too many protagonists made everything feel very surface level, less character development than I'd have liked

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐
Book #49: Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil - V.E Schwab #BookSky

Fantastic, but a tough read as someone who has been in an abusive relationship & is afraid of perpetuating the cycle of abuse. A main characters is supposed to be Scottish, but some speech & references aren't right

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Comic #21: Dragon Age Magekiller - Greg Rucka #BookSky

I always wondered what the rest of the Inquisition was up to while the team was busy running about killing demons and saving cows. First mention of the Venatori, the big bad from Veilguard. Good characters, now on to part 2

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #48: Home seeking - Karissa Chen #BookSky

Picked up for Goodreads Debut Darlings and really happy I did. Beautiful novel about a piece of history I've never read about. Unique narrative style, well fleshed out characters and very engaging story. Strong debut novel

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Comic #20: White Sand Vol. 2 - Brandon Sanderson #BookSky

Lots of political intrigue that would fit better in a novel. I hate the new art style from the last chapter. Interested to see how they resolve the sand master storyline and I'd like to know more about dark side

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
Book #47: On a Red Station, Drifting - Aliette de Bodard #BookSky

Very interesting world, but was too short to stick the landing for me. It's hard to world build & character develop in a novella, the character motives all felt muddy to me and I was left wanting more in a bad way

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #46: Atmosphere - Taylor Jenkins Reid #BookSky

TJR is one of my favourites and I'll read just about anything she releases. I really loved this, interesting setting, compelling characters, and a really sweet lesbian romance. I'll be recommending this to others for a while

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #45: The Fifth Season - NK Jemisin (Broken Earth #1) #BookSky

This wasn't what I expected but I really liked it. Prose was less dense than I feared, and I liked learning how the 3 POVs fit together. Compelling characters and an interesting world, cliffhanger ending

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #44: Inferno (A Poet's Novel) - Eileen Myles #BookSky

Memoir told in a very unique way. I listened to this as an audiobook narrated by the author & I think that helped it flow better. The structure is very free form & the timeline jumps around a lot. Worthwhile LGBT read

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #43: Sea of Tranquility - Emily St John Mandel #BookSky

I love time travel & multi-POV stories so this book was made for me. I saw the final twist coming but that didn't make it less satisfying, I honestly wish the book had been longer to get to know the characters better

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book #42: Say You'll Remember Me - Abby Jimenez #BookSky

Picked this on a whim for the Goodreads Chart Toppers badge, didn't read the blurb before I bought. It was amazing, very sweet and compelling romance, family drama that felt real & interesting, and lots of animals. VILFs forever

Rating ⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐
I wanted to like it, the central conceit of someone losing their only family and being caught up in something while navigating their grief is interesting but it just wasn't well done
Book #41: The Maid - Nita Prose #BookSky

This was bad. Main character is clearly neurodivergent but she feels like a caricature, her social skills vary wildly based on what the plot needs. Our antagonists just take advantage of Molly and they aren't even smart about it. Plot is okay

Rating ⭐️⭐️
Book #40: Pet Sematary - Stephen King #BookSky

I have lifetime goal to read all Stephen King novels and short story collections, this is my 17th book, and probably one of my favourites of his. Suitably spooky with lots of anticipation, the cat is not the problem here

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐
