I am so often, as I look at the world in this moment, reminded of this verse from the 5-volume Ming dynasty novel of manners “Plum in the Golden Vase” (trans Roy):

Y'all, I just wrote an answer to a question about the sensationalized news headlines circulating about the Chernobyl containment structure.
The bottom line is that there's a hole in the structure, which is not good, but it's not the end of containment, which some reports make it sound like.

The way this is being reported is extremely irresponsible.
There is a hole in the containment structure, about 10 feet across. No other damage is reported. That hole can allow some of the dusty radioactive material to escape.
That is what "can no longer do its job of containment" means.

Kinda, but it most definitely no longer has an estimated 100 year lifespan to get necessary work done. Which means it’ll need to be replaced much sooner than we’d have liked and it was pulling teeth to get this done.

I'm devastated by what the field has lost in terms of pandemic prevention research and infrastructure, but even more for the (to date, 60+) PhD students and postdocs on the project, many of whom face an immediate funding cliff at the end of the year. NSF had the funds for them and just didn't pay /3
