Every non-far right European government should send a similar message to Washington and then draw up a list of US extremists who will no longer be given visas. Reciprocity is the only option or the bullying and contempt will continue to proliferate.

Jamie Kirchik has a longish piece in Politico pointing out how the Kremlin has long used "peace" as a cover for their power grabs. The parallel with Witkoff's words is clear. Only one way he has been duped.

Whatever one may think of Kirchik, the parallel is there, and I hadn't thought of it.

A disturbing update to this story: Despite the fact that he was about to be released from a US prison after completing a sentence here, when Kelvin Membreño was deported to El Salvador he was sent to CECOT prison and remains there. The family has not heard from him since.
NEW — Kelvin Membreño will be deported to El Salvador by ICE tomorrow. He’s the birth father of three US citizen daughters and has become an important part of their lives.

Here their adoptive mother makes a last ditch plea to let him stay in the same country as the girls. A gutting guest essay:
A mother's urgent plea to stop ICE from deporting her daughters’ birth father tomorrow
He served his time in the US. He deserves to heal here, too.

Sounds like the Trump admin deported an American citizen with no criminal record basically because of her ethnicity, over the ruling of a judge. She is 22
"Her family has now been told she has been deported, despite US District Judge Brendan Hurson ruling Thursday that she could not be deported pending a hearing...attorneys said Monday that they have...confirm[ed] with the hospital she was born in Maryland." https://bit.ly/3MMdJvz

Same with the protests in Bulgaria-- they were anti-budget/anti-corruption/pro-EU and twitter was flooded w claims they were anti-euro adoption and anti-EU. Despite the EU flags protestors waved in support of the euro. The amount of anti-EU propaganda by Ru bots and MAGA on twitter is massive.
The protests in Lithuania were against a media law, that would have given the Lithuanian government more influence over public broadcasting. Kinda like what Trump did. Yet all of MAGA social media posts clips of these protests claiming they were "Anti-EU"

When I teaching the Holocaust I note the Holocaust museum’s definition of a concentration camp is a prison whose inmates are denied due process. These are by definition concentration camps.
These are concentration camps. No other way to describe them. Truly horrific, and none of it surprising in the least.
30 minutes. Some deportees described sexual assault. Detainee describes the guard sexually assaulting most detainees. Lights left on all day. Prisoners not given clean water.

Now the DHS tour. Nobody spoke to the detainees. Noem's video was in a different area of the prison.

Read this thread describing the abuse in CECOT covered by the CBS report Weiss is trying to bury, and then remember that El Salvador is a state party to the Rome Treaty, which to my reading quite clearly covers the torture and sexual abuse described.
This has been made available, so for purposes of commenting on Bari Weiss's decision to spike the story, here's a live-post of that segment.

It begins with a "you may recall" summary of the deportation to el Salvador. Describes the admin's claim that it could deport the men without due process
