Republicans could override the filibuster and reopen the government with only 51 votes.

Any other solution requires the House, and Johnson is refusing to bring it back into session.

Republicans completely control the shutdown. They don't want to reopen the government.

I think Dick Cheney’s death today highlighted this divide.

The Democrats who still say shit like “reach across the aisle” and praise evil people are playing to a political audience that no longer exists.

Mamdani wasn’t cruel to Cuomo in a Trumpism style, but he didn’t concede anything either.
I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”

The 2024 election was not a binding referendum on American culture that everyone must accept and accommodate. Never was.

Maybe math ain't mathing, but it seems like silwa "splitting the vote" wouldn't have mattered anyways
He got more votes than both of them combined

What I learned tonight is the future of the Democratic Party is a trans Muslim CIA agent wine mom who wants to eliminate capitalism and barter with people on the free bus.

serious note: they're gonna try 5x harder to sabotage the midterms after tonight and we're gonna have to organize on a literally historic scale to stop them
really obvious now why trump and the republican party have been working so hard to prevent fair elections lol they know

Republican guy on tv hand wringing about how Zohran's speech was divisive. You can just point and laugh at these guys you don't need to argue with them

And this is why the corporate class shut down Teen Vogue.
WOW. 81% of women 18-29 voted for Mamdani, 80% for Sherril, and 78% for Spanberger.

Gen Z women aren't playing around.

Raise your hand if you would rather the government pay TSA and air traffic controllers to keep our skies safe and travel open,

than to pay useless, racist terorrist ICE goons.

My god this is for real one of the most incredible speeches I’ve ever seen by an elected US politician: ‘And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is to dismantle the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.’
Mamdani: "We can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."
Y'all, it came down to the last precinct. This is a 24 year old black man running against 74 year old white man who has been the incumbent for SIXTEEN YEARS

I'm so proud of #SamFoster and I hope I get the chance to vote for him in four years.

"The immediate results suggest whatever confidence this president enjoyed is now crumbling amid a record length government shutdown, a camouflaged cascade of federal kidnappings, a tariff-battered economy, and the systemic demolition of democratic norms," @jimsaksa.com reports on election night.

So much of what the Democrats got wrong since 2016 was this idea of “we’re going to go back to normal.” There are maybe enough elements of the party who realize now that that idea is a mistake: the way must be forward into something new, energizing, and hopeful.

Here’s a radical idea- if the republicans stop with the gerrymandering, Dems should just keep going. Let’s act like them and push every advantage.

Maybe Republican members of Congress will finally do their job and start functioning as a co-equal branch of government. Of course House Republicans will have to show up for work again for that to happen.

i know why reporters feel like they have to do this, but it's honestly kinda nuts to ask Trump at this late date for evidence backing up his lies about "rigged elections" when he obviously has none and never will

We need a new generation of leaders who are the voices of democracy, freedom, social justice, & the rule of law.

A new generation that renews the “we” in “we the people.”

Instead of fretting over Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party should embrace him as part of its future.
