It's especially remarkable when the Canadian Minister of Immigration is of proud Middle Eastern immigrant background--the 'pulling up the gangplank' phenomenon?
As the story explains with horrifying examples, this is literally a question of life and death. The student has done everything possible. The university has actually done its part.

The Canadian government is choosing this. If he dies the government is accessory to murder.
A student admitted to grad school at UNB is stranded in Gaza because the Canadian government won't issue a study permit without biometrics that in turn cannot be produced without a travel visa to leave Gaza.

The Canadian government needs to issue the permit and UNB needs to intervene.

"Not only was the groundwork for the Trump administration’s descent into increasingly repressive and illegal tactics laid under Biden, but the investigation revealed that the framework for cracking down on student free speech was also in place before the pro-Palestine encampments."

Kudos to Kennedy's handlers for getting him a cover shoot -- praying with a rosary! -- at the same time he's at the center of a 🤢 cyber infidelity scandal. No notes.

Academics: if there's going to be any leadership in the 21st century it's got to come from staff, students, and us. As the recent U of California and UMD actions show, "if you act like a union then you're a union"
Within @aaup.org, there's a lot of advocacy chapters who wonder what power they have without a CBA. We're here to say it doesn't matter. Organizing is organizing is organizing. You want the contract but if you act like a union then you're a union. I call this The Newsies Principle.

We @uam-umd.bsky.social won. Faculty packed town halls, talked to their colleagues and collected hundreds of petition signatures. Now UMD is coughing up $8.75m, during a deficit, to fund faculty whose research is under attack. Not enough, but a helluva thing for a union the state calls illegal.

Wow — Senators Van Hollen, Smith, Murphy, Sanders, Warren, Markey, Merkley, Heinrich have created an official internal "Fight Club."

They're challenging Schumer & Gillibrand's leadership, arguing the party is using an old, corporate-friendly playbook insufficient to take on Trump or win elections.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

Today we reconsider the major work of Frank Moore Cross, perhaps America's most influential scholar of the Hebrew Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, and ancient epigraphy, at 4pm, Fairfax B (Third Floor) Sheraton with an epic lineup!
My college professor Frank Moore Cross described Phoenician, Aramaic, and Hebrew as "national scripts," but nationalism is about fitting a language and culture into a polity, and none of these were developed for one polity, as @josephinequinn.bsky.social showed w the many cities of "Phoenicia."

To all of the imbeciles here calling me a liar and telling me to do my "research". Nefesh B'Nefesh is a NON-PROFIT agency that helps North American Jews who want to participate in Aliyah. It is NOT a real estate brokerage. Its website shows communities in the West Bank but lists no properties.

Commentary: The UC faculty just won a big court victory over Trump. But why didn't UC join their lawsuit?
The UC faculty went to court to fight Trump's funding cutoffs and won. Why has the university system tried to negotiate instead?
