There are many material reasons why Netflix owning WB/HBO sucks but the pettiest one I have is they suck at distributing their own work or building up any enthusiasm. They have failed their way to the top with a strategy that doesn’t benefit the work.

Technically, with DJ production and turntablism you can use any instrumental palette. Who's using those specific manual sound manipulation skills for a take on folk music?

If you were going to make the case that Primal Scream are very good, in however long it takes, what would you put on the playlist that I probably haven't heard?

Why do people, when they see an opinion that's been around for decades, need to call it 'tedious'? If something is polarising, it's gonna polarise people, including the new crowd who weren't around when it debuted. That's not then their fault for noticing polarising qualities in a work.

I treat karaoke songs like coffeeshop orders. There’s always one that I can order up anywhere and know I’ll probably like how it comes out (for me, that’s a black tea latte/“All About That Bass”), but I never get anything too complex or time-consuming if the place is crowded.

If I wrote We Built This City on Ska, and it was a dancehall reggae track rather than ska, that'd definitely be a point against the song I made 🤷
Pedantically I must point out that it does not actually claim to be rock & roll, merely that R&R is the foundation of this city

I have regular bad movie nights with my mates and lemme tell ya nothing-and I truly mean NOTHING-trains you to see how certain elements of movies work by watching people fuck these up spectacularly
There is this thing with movies where like.... You don't learn to understand movies by watching good movies. If you just watch good movies it's like "wow! It's like magic!"

You gotta watch bad movies -- like actually bad movies -- to see the the raw process. I... think art in general is like that??

My fella’s old band had 25 million streams on Spotify this year, which should translate to everyone in our house sleeping on a pile of ermine coats, but what it really translates to makes no discernible material difference in anyone’s lives. That’s how I feel about Spotify wrapped.

Does anyone know where the term "turning your brain off" comes from? OED doesn't have an entry for it. Google Ngram suggests it became popular in the 1960s, but that's hardly conclusive. Nearly all of my students use it to describe their media consumption and I'd love to know more about its history.

The music appreciation community is a lot like living in a big apartment block together.

It gets annoying when people are always slamming The Doors.
