boy this thing just keeps happening where the Trump campaign or administration suffers a political setback and then within a few days it’s followed by the exact kind of shooting that’s most politically advantageous for them, they sure keep getting lucky with those complete coincidences

This is true in my field, and it’s the exact same people it was a decade ago - some are Epstein collaborators, some are creeps in their own rights, and some are just plain bullies
The flip side of all of this is that every field IS much smaller than we think, and several small groups of horrible people have undue influence, and basically no field is free of their capture right now. And we just have to evict these people and never invite them to anything again

To add to this thread which you should read if you're interested in the business of writing, I am a NYT Bestseller. I technically make a living from Hood Feminism, though I wouldn't say I make a great living from it. I earned out a 6 figure advance in my first year, and have sold almost 400K books
You can see from this how it's possible for a writer to be a bestseller and not earn a living. I've hit bestseller lists in the UK with 2.6k sold in a week, fewer in Canada. In the US, I think it's 5k+? (I haven't done that yet.) A good start but a far cry from the 22,000 you need to make $50,000.

one of the things a lot of people who’ve never gone through green card interviews don’t get is that aside from being stressed (even in “better” circumstances), you have to go in with a healthy sense of paranoia because you can’t tell if the small talk is another test, etc.

I've been asked before if I use Generative AI. And my answer is:

"No. Why would I want to undermine the economy, the environment, artistic expression, and human dignity, all at the same time?"

That's what all Gen AI is: a cancer that makes a very few rich people wealthier at the expense of all.

THREAD.

How my best book almost died.

I finished my latest novel in late summer last year.

It was my 15th book: most ambitious and enjoyable thing I’d ever written.

Shortly after that, my then publishers, Unbound, decided they would not pay me the money they owed me for it...

This is like when Disney told someone they weren't liable for their partner's death because they'd signed the Disney Plus subscription agreement.
OpenAI says they aren't liable for the suicide of a user their chat bot urged to kill himself because suicide is a violation of the TOS
Additionally, OpenAI argues its not liable because Raine, by using ChatGPT for self-harm, broke its terms of service

The use of AI to describe everything from LLMs to regression on big data sets is a bit problematic. It's used by the folks creating AI slop to claim credit for ML successes based on totally different architectures & we are now at the point where normal people hear AI & think chatbot (argggh!).
