This is why the inflatable costumes works so well -- it works the same way calling them "weird" or "creepy" did. It disrupts their narrative, and makes them seem pathetic rather than cool-and-cruel.

You need to see this:

“The show of force is the point. They want these images to be out…The Department of Homeland Security is walking around Chicago with a film crew.” @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social

Not to mention that 25% of the FBI is now working on immigration, over 40% of field agents are.

my grandma lived in a town where there was an 867-5309 and we called it every time we got to her house. those poor people.

I do know my husband's cell but I think that might be it. OH and the vet's number.

In fact I *STILL* remember my best friends' phone numbers, from nearly 40 years ago.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Did you know that the New York Times reporter who wrote the first fawning profile of Trump in 1976 also promoted the hoax about poisoned Halloween candy?
Misinformation is contagious. The media helped build the Trump myth, and we're all suffering now.
I wrote about it in my free newsletter.
The media’s kissing up to Trump started early
How lazy journalism helped us get to where we are today

We DO need new energy and fresh tactics - but our authoritarians are among the weakest of any authoritarians in history. They can fall, and it can be quicker and further than your wildest imaginations.

All we need is the courage to try stuff until some of the things we try start obviously working.

Great thread on the distinctive political culture of Portland, by a US historian who is very much from Portland.
ceaubin.bsky.social
What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

okay one time talking about heaven is just a random thought word vomited into the world. This is what? the third or fourth time?

Trump: "I don't think there's anything that's gonna get me in heaven. I think I'm not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to make heaven."

White people who have spent decades thinking “Born in the USA” is patriotic and “Every Breath You Take” is a great wedding song are suddenly very concerned about not being able to understand lyrics to some songs at the Super Bowl halftime show.

I walked from Uptown through Edgewater up to Devon this afternoon and there was someone with a whistle every few blocks. Cyclists with whistles were patrolling alleys.
thatguywasfly.bsky.social
One thing I want you to take from videos like this is the absolute cacophony of whistles and screams of "GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD" from people in the streets and in buildings. And more and more people are at that point every day.

ICE/Border Patrol held a weapon on a guy who was demanding they show him their face in Rogers Park today

They use these regularly and did during the last administration as well.

We have to cultivate and allow joy, especially in the face of all the misery.
magicbeans.bsky.social
Indeed. Joy is profound. One of the best moments of my life was seeing a dear friend’s literal dream come true.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

President Stephen Miller’s fantasies escalate from here

“Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes… Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated.”

In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.

She screams, “I’m 15,” as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.

This is not about immigration enforcement.

It's about terrorizing Americans.
