absolutely! i know it wasn't the show itself but "who will get the kiss from daddy?" defines literally our entire politics right now

"this entire medium doesn't matter because my friends don't send me memes from a show that ended 6 years ago"

nobody really talks about Succession anymore. or Game of Thrones. sort of confirms my thesis that, with rare exceptions, television does not really matter.

there are plenty of conflicts within this relationship and we all know the people in charge want to pay the creatives as little as possible but the rank-and-file generally like, y'know, physically making TV and movies
schwindter.bsky.social
any time you hear a writer assert that "hollywood would love to make AI movies" you can safely assume they have never spoken to anyone who actually works in the business. most non-c-suite studio execs got into the business to work with actors and writers and directors

Could not be a clearer fail of the journalistic principle of “If someone says it's raining and another person says it's dry, it's not your job to quote them both. Your job is to look out of the f—-ing window and find out which is true."

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Could not disagree more with the Big Picture folks on their assessment that Daniel Day-Lewis “can’t possibly do comedy.” He’s fucking hilarious in ROOM WITH A VIEW *and* THERE WILL BE BLOOD! I feel like I’m going insane.

😮😮😮 anxiety is AI, generative slop based on my previous feelings with none of the context that created those feelings in the first place and no way to ever create something truly new

‘dear rax, how can i make sure i’m ready for the day my very sick mother dies?’

Your question was whether there's a way to prepare for your mother's death, not whether there's a way to worry less about it, and I'll take a stab at answering that question using my experience with my father's as an example. No, you can't prepare for it. It will be like nothing you've felt yet. Maybe you think that if you worry about it really well—if you devote yourself to this anxiety, if you memorize your fear like a prayer—you can defeat it before it defeats you, like Roman's "pre-grieving" on Succession. But it didn't work for him because it doesn't work. Authoritative as it can feel, anxiety is incapable of describing anything it hasn't actually seen, like the death of a parent. All it can do is push us around various ugly landmarks in our minds: awful experiences we've already had, pains we've already processed. Anxiety is the blustering cokehead cousin of self-soothing. It brags about everything it knows to conceal the fact that it doesn't know anything. You can't feel what you haven't felt until, well...until you feel it.

the reason cuomo is saying only wealthy new yorkers can afford bus fare is because he's talking about express buses that cost $7

right? weird attempt to dunk on your own supporters but okay

[Me, a poor, on the subway, glowering jealously at all those fat cat, fancy pants rich people on the public bus]
Andrew Cuomo tweet:

@ZohranKMamdani's "plan" provides no relief for working families who take the subway, and unnecessary benefits to wealthy New Yorkers who take the bus and can afford the fare.

I focus on working families, while @ZohranKMamdani the mansion boy focuses on helping the rich.

really hard to overstate how hideous and unwelcoming the manhattan side of the pedestrian path is. poorly signed, still looks like a regular road a car could come barreling down at any second, dark and often a lot of detritus. lotta room for improvement!
nyc.streetsblog.org
The Queensboro Bridge finally has separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians — but the long-overdue upgrade still falls short of its full potential because the city has failed to install proper markings five months after the new footpath opened.

Machado issues her first statement since being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and makes a thinly-veiled appeal to Trump for US intervention in Venezuela:

This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom.
We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.
I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!

on a very warm day i went into a coffee shop and saw they had iced tea on the menu. refreshing! asked for an iced tea. guy behind the counter gave me a withering look and said no, he couldn't do that, because the tea was too special to ruin with ice

went into a pizza place at 6 pm, asked the young woman behind the counter for 2 slices of pepperoni. "oh... we're out?" cheese? "uhhh...we're out." any pizza at all? "uhhh" can we order a pizza to go? "i'm... not sure." she had to go talk to her manager, then forgot to give steve the beer he ordered

"i need chatgpt to help me with brainstorming" is so revealing. ideas are so easy, especially if it's for, like, a narrative art. stories are everywhere! what do you mean you need a plagiarism machine for ideas?!

despite only having $85,000 to make this movie ($70,000 of that our own) it's all all human-made! even the, like, 5 VFX shots. no AI ever, that's the @sssparkers.bsky.social and me promise!
