“The Ballad of Black Tom” LaValle, V

5/5 Retelling of HP Lovecraft story. Like the quiet way Tom has motivations for this story, & regrets, plus the way that his Blackness feels both a rebuke to Lovecraft but also a reflection of the times & society. He’s pushed to the villain & the world will pay
“The Weight of Blood” Jackson, T

5/5 Carrie but make it the horror of racism, both overt & internalized, even while trying to escape the horror of HS. It keeps some of the religious overtones w/o making it so OTT, & the characters are richer. More YA than the OG, still feels more authentic (175)

DEAN: What's the tariff on bananas?

LUTNICK: Generally 10%

DEAN: Walmart has already increased the cost of bananas by 8%

LUTNICK: If you build in America, there is no tariff

DEAN: We cannot build bananas in America

Weird how time works isn’t it? In some US states a pregnant 11 year-old isn’t allowed an abortion because they need to deal with the “adult” consequences of getting pregnant, but 35 year-old neo-Nazis in the govt group chat are “boys” doing “things young boys do”

some people are fretting that "these people are up to something, that's why they're all here" but I suspect it's strictly because they are starved for attention and looking for fights. It's no fun to be them! Pity the person who pays money to rent a bluecheck who opens an account here too
it is my pleasure to report they are indeed mad as fuck on the other site over being blocked and ignored. keep up the excellent work everyone

Not being even vaguely sarcastic:

At some point, a journalist needs to ask Johnson “you regularly claim you have no idea what your own government is doing. If we take you at your word, how are you so poorly informed, and do you this level of ignorance should disqualify you as speaker?”
Q: What's your message to the 170 US citizens who have been detained by ICE? About 20 of them are children

MIKE JOHNSON: I don't know what you're talking about with the children. I haven't seen that so I'm not going to comment on it.

By my count: Of the 15 Departments of the US Government, 13 launched new BlueSky accounts tonight (all but Justice and HUD), and all 13 have posted explicitly partisan political posts blaming Democrats and/or Chuck Schumer for the government shutdown.

Trump's federal agents shot Marimar Martinez, a US citizen, multiple times for allegedly menacing them with her car in Chicago. Only hours later, Kristi Noem and DHS started spreading disinformation about the shooting.

Now the official line is crumbling. 1/

Trump’s Secret Police Shot a Citizen. Then Damning New Info Emerged.
As the official Trump administration line about the shooting of a Chicago woman crumbles, Senator Chris Murphy is asking pointed questions about what really happened here. Will we ever get answers?

Our federal tax dollars are being used to fund a network of government social media accounts that pump out disinformation 24/7. Even during a government shutdown. It’s definitely not essential work.

“Fledgling” Butler, O

3/5 Interesting take on vampire mythos, but sometimes it’s REALLY HARD not to think that she’s living in a 10yo body (4’11!) & these adults are sexually into her. Weird tension there. (186)
“The Water Dancer” Coates, T

3/5 The language is so lush and imaginative and tactile, but I really don’t think I like this at all. I like the magical realism but using magical realism to give mystical powers to Harriet Tubman makes me a little 😬 (185)
“Gender Queer” Kobabe, M

5/5 Fantastic comic & probably too frank for many cishet parents, but I think could help a lot of sophomores+ who are struggling to be themselves while knowing they aren’t cis or het. LOVE that post puberty Maia always has leg hair when eir legs are exposed (184)
“The Only Good Indians” Graham Jones, S

4/5 way more animal death than I can usually handle, but it’s not super graphic. A great revenge horror story with a lot of Blackfeet culture. I love how you feel like Lewis & Cass & Gabe are still brothers ten years on. Sucks to suck guys (183)
“Carrie” King, S

2.5/5 Ugh the weight of blood is so much better. This is fine, it’s perfectly cromulent. But it’s just religious & bullying trauma with occasional fatphobia & random N words. WHY ARE THERE N WORDS STEPHEN (the constant mood) (182)
“Darkening Age” Nixey, C

4.5/5 It reads more like gossip than real history, which is awesome, but man is this bleak. The fact that it’s been 2k years & Christians still feel like they are persecuted when they’re Nero? Yikes. (181)
“Indecent Advances” Polchin, J

4/5 60 years of the gay panic defense 😒 (that face is for how many people got to kill gay men and either get away with it or it would be manslaughter) a little dull, but important history for the gay (esp white gay male) community (180)
“Sacrifice” Chupeco, R

4.5/5 You know what the ending is going to be pretty close to the end, but you know, sometimes you just want to enjoy the ride. I don’t think the teen romance was really needed, and the opening was slow! But when the shitty guys get their deserts? Yes absolutely. (179)

Johnson doesn't think domestic violence is serious.
Q: This has been reported for a while. Cory Mills was accused of beating a girlfriend in his DC apt. Are you concerned about these allegations?

JOHNSON: You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He's been a faithful colleague. I don't know the details. Let's talk about things that are really serious
