I actually would like to see a GIANT Japanese cooperative running an ATProto stack.

I think it would probably get funding from the government and fit well with the civic environment in Japan.

Maybe one co-op per prefectures!

But @moja.blue knows the local environment there better.
Bluesky has rapidly grown to a $1.05 billion valuation while promising "no ads." But VCs expect returns within a few years. Rejecting surveillance capitalism and returning profits to investors—can these coexist?

most of our current nightmare isn't about failing a better past so much as it's about reaping our failure to deal with our previous bullshit.

Black people and poor people and women were all disenfrachised. Black disenfrancisement in particular is a major antecedent for gop gerrymandering.

people can leave my mentions alone and go argue with survey creators instead.

Please go and cope somewhere else.

"I was using local-first software in the 80's!" quips a greybeard on HN.

No you were not. A common misconception about local-first software is that it's just software that doesn't use the network. Local-first is inherently multi-device and collaborative with other users.

This is what I mean when I say Fetterman has lost his political ear calling this stuff no big deal.

People DO NOT respond well to political grift and theft. FFS they do not respond well to federal office workers having coffee machines at work.

If you cut them in, maybe. Otherwise, no.
One observation is I don't believe the GOP really is quite pricing in how damaging politically building a gigantic ballroom and Trump paying himself 250m in the open is when people are visibly hurting economically.
It'd make sense if we were at the last line and had no other options, but we most certainly have options at this point in time

HOW ABOUT NEITHER.

none of the above.

I shouldn’t have to have someone interpret tattoos on a half naked white man sitting for an interview before we all agree this is absolutely absurd and we all need to just move on from this guy.

You cannot expect Black or Jewish people to put with this fucking ridiculous nonsense. Come on now

I am somewhat disheartened by the amount of pushback here. I really don't understand it. He was a candidate who looked appealing, but turned out to have a bunch of downsides, including that we can't really trust him! there are other candidates! He's one guy, not the messiah.

THIS ISN'T WORKING. You need to TALK about the problem as as problem. Frankly, I think the whole "we will ignore it until it evaporates" thing is the height of liberal solipsism and foolishness. These evil forces grow when we let them and must be challenged directly.
I think a more realistic avenue for change is gradually getting journalists to stop using it or switch to something else. Probably after getting other kinds of users to switch. Which undermines political support for it, etc

By the way, identity politics are politics. Only some people seem not to understand this. They also misread Combahee because they don't take the intellectual work of Black women seriously. It's too bad for them because they'd be better for that engagement.

The dude who singlehandedly controls the government is demanding it pay him a quarter of a billion dollars of our tax money as restitution for having been caught committing crimes.
President Trump is demanding that the Justice Department pay him about $230 million in compensation for the federal investigations into him.

Whether he gets paid will ultimately be up to DOJ's second-in-command, who was recently his personal lawyer.
