We're thinking of printing this out to put up in the kitchen next to the sink. Or maybe getting a needlepoint.

I had prepared to do a dramatic presentation for a final with a friend, but he bailed an hour before the exam. I wrote a poem, memorized, and performed it. (Got an A.) Writing poetry homework on the bus to school or during homeroom when I forgot to do it the night before probably helped with speed.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

This works for programming too. Take a walk, do something else, sleep on it, whatever. Your brain keeps working in the background, there have been lots of bits of code that I was stuck on that hours later my brain is like obviously here’s the solution and I am no longer stuck
monsterteatime.bsky.social
When I struggled with something writing-wise I take a walk. And 100% of the time I end up figuring out the solution. I would never, ever, ever, ask a machine to do that for me. Wtf.

OMG, PDF, it's been so long since I've read you, how have you been?!?!?!?

...whoever decided this was a useful feature does know that if you have a PDF with machine readable text (which you would need for chatting to "work") you've always been able to keyword search for information, right?

I feel like mine are mild so I’m super curious to know what number they’re at because normally it’s bloating and “you overdid squats a little” and that’s surely something that also happens to men

Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

This Day in Labor History: September 13, 1932. The Amalgamated Clothing Workers led a successful strike of garment workers in Baltimore. This strike was a sign of the growing organizing of the 1930s that would eventually change the world for much of the American working class!!!!

Oh, it’s a *gap*! That makes more sense, I was wondering why the instructions were telling you not to put a shim in between the two pieces on the left

About ten years ago, Texas A&M purchased an LGBTQ+ research collection and immediately wanted to have a library exhibit featuring it to showcase their commitment to diversity initiatives. I think A&M ranked higher on the list of most conservative colleges at the time than it does now

A professor at Texas A&M taught… something related to gender that offended a student, who secretly filmed herself objecting. That video is picked up by TX legislators, who demand her firing, and now the dean and dept head have been fired.

A&M Dean removed following student complaints over curriculum
The Department of Justice has also acknowledged the situation and said it would be investigating.

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

Oh man, I remember having an SE. I don't normally name my computers but I called this one "Little Gerb" because it made noises like a gerbil/hamster running on its exercise wheel. (It did not, however, run Windows 95 or MS DOS)

BBC Breakfast this morning had a long segment about the 30th anniversary of Windows 95. So what vintage computer did they put in the studio as a handy prop?

This, from the Quakers, is a pretty good example of how to resist pressure from bigot lobbying groups. Effectively “we legally can allow trans people to use the loo, we morally should, and we tried it and nothing bad happened”

Reading the list of conditions that qualify you for an updated COVID booster, I think the easiest route for most people without an existing diagnosis will be "physical inactivity" because that's entirely self-attested, with the runner up being "I was a smoker for a few months a few decades ago"

FDA is authorizing anybody with a risk factor from this list to receive the vaccines, as well as anybody 65+.

Read every fucking word of this thread (note: mentions a trans person’s death by suicide). I’m an ex-journalist who left for different reasons but the tonality of all of this is deeply familiar.

I spent the 2010's arguing with my white colleagues that we were facing a crisis in newsroom diversity. The smart, dedicated, talented cis white journalists I thought of as my friends didn't want to hear it. Most of them ignored me. At least one of them told me to go to hell.
