Just let it happen, my dude. You're already so sweaty.
So a trip to NYC from my hometown took ... 19 hours, and we almost missed our connection in DC due to that delay. In the northeast, it's great. Elsewhere, it needs work in order to be something potential passengers are truly missing out on.
It's because, outside of the northeast corridor of the US, those tracks are owned by commercial concerns, so passenger rail traffic must give way to freight. It can result in extreme delays and quite long trips. My Amtrak trip was delayed at least 5 hours with no notice back in the day.
As my own teams circle the drain, it brings me great joy to see Vandy freaking BRING IT against LSU. Anchor down! #SEC #Football #AnchorDown

Nothing bad can happen it can only good happen
True madness and poetry.
The silo was dead quiet when I got there. No wind. No bugs. The kind of stillness that makes your skin itch because it feels like the Earth’s holding its breath.

I parked the cruiser and stepped out. Called it in—nothing unusual so far.
After hiking in the mountains last weekend, my calves and quads commiserate.
i used a stairmaster for 10 minutes yesterday for the first time and at the time i thought *i* was the stair master

but having woken up today with my legs feeling like jelly, i fear the stairs may have mastered me in the end

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself
An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

yes this timeline is a rough route. yes there are waves of strife. but behind it all lies the inertia of all things which prompted fish to trot out of the ocean and humans to gather in commune. we are driven to fill the nothing with ourselves, with LOVE. its the unconquerable wind behind our sails

Whatever that praying means for you, get it done. That includes scientifically cheering for her wellbeing. Don’t fuss about it, just make good thoughts for a good woman.
listen. when dolly parton’s sister says it’s time for us all to be prayer warriors for dolly. you fucking pray for dolly

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚
Gone, man. It is just gone at this point.
We also desperately need better and more accessible public transit options. There will likely be a time before I'm elderly that I won't be able to see well enough to drive. But if I can't drive and maybe can't afford Uber/taxi, how would I get around? That's a recipe to be homebound.
We invented graduated drivers licenses for teens. They worked. But we leave 80-year-olds to “see how it goes.” Every family suffers on their own. But this is a shared social problem, not a personal one. We need conditional licenses for older drivers. Daylight. Local. Annual medical check-ins.

Quick, someone steal all the refs' yellow flags while they're not paying attention!
Fortunately, we hit the sweet spot in the American medical system somehow. Then, after a lengthy nap and acute pharmaceutical intervention, we were able to show the kid how incredible Daniel Boone National Forest and the gorge are. Two very different but equally important lessons. Fin/
As it was, because of the time of day and the proximity to those major hospitals (pretty sure all the trauma cases just get directed straight there and bypass where we wound up), we were in and out in 90 minutes. At home, at a bigger ER, would've been 8 hours+ and possibly going unseen. 5/
But if it WAS just a kidney stone, then it wasn't worth driving all the way to the big hospitals because kidney stones hurt but won't typically kill you. So you don't often triage that high at a bigger hospital. Hence, the medium-sized ER. 5/
We wound up at a mid-sized ER about halfway between where we were staying and the major hospitals. Larger than the tiny one we passed up because what if it was worse than a kidney stone and surgery was necessary? How are their imaging capabilities? How long would it take for transport? 3/
We were pretty sure, based on symptoms, that was what we were dealing with, but we had to consider: What if we're wrong and it's something worse? We were an hour from major hospitals, but only because we weren't actually staying in the gorge. Had we been camping? Easily closer to two. 2/
Took the kid to Red River Gorge for the weekend so he could see the part of the country we come from. Ended up teaching him a lesson about the American health care system thanks to what turned out to be a kidney stone making its presence known in a rural area. 1/
