I commend Chief Judge Timothy Evans’ general administrative order prohibiting the execution of civil warrants in and around Cook County Court buildings. This move will prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from further jeopardizing the functioning of our courts by using court facilities to enforce unrelated civil matters. The court system plays a vital role in keeping people and communities safe. We must work to ensure all stakeholders with court cases feel safe coming to hearings and engaging with the justice system.

This policy affirms our commitment to protecting the rights of all Cook County residents and ensuring equal access to justice. This policy also comes at a critical time when ICE enforcement has become increasingly violent, inhumane and unlawful. These tactics are unacceptable and un-American. In Cook County, we are committed to peacefully advancing safety and justice in ways that heal, not harm our communities.
