Uhhh... this is catastrophic for democracy.

New report maps a “severe” shortage of local journalists in the U.S.
The report from Rebuild Local News and Muck Rack finds that more than 1,000 counties — one out of three in the nation — do not have the equivalent of even one full-time local journalist.

As more journalists are driven out of their jobs, I keep hearing this drumbeat of "it's ok -- they can start their own newsletter or publication." Some can. But becoming your own business is a huge job, and will eliminate many talented reporters from the public sphere. Here's why. (1/5)

Also to make an em dash all you have to do is put two dashes in a row in Word, and the program makes it for you. Wordpress too.

Anything an LLM is doing is stolen from actual writers and I'll be damned if I'll let a plagiarism machine dictate how I use language, grammar or punctuation.
Stop spreading this garbage about em dashes in ACTUAL EDITED PROSE OH MY GOD.

Plenty of actual human beings know how to type em dashes! We’re called “writers” and “editors” — maybe you’ve heard of us?

I kept hoping this myth would burn itself out, but no — the idea that em dashes are a sign of AI writing just keeps spreading.

I finally couldn't take it anymore, so I crashed a segment into the latest Grammar Girl podcast. 🧵

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

🧵 addressing the argument: "AI won’t replace teachers, but it will save them time and make them more effective.”

Adding edtech doesn't necessarily save teachers time. A recent study found that LMSs sold to schools over the past decade+ as time-savers aren’t delivering on making teaching easier.
Technology is supposed to decrease teacher burnout – but we found it can sometimes make it worse
Efforts to simplify teachers’ jobs through technology can backfire without a strong focus on teacher well-being.

brb gonna make “daily ice cream habit” my whole personality
scientists consistently found that consumption of ice cream led to reduced risk for t2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

They didn't want to believe this and buried the data in favor of yogurt when they published. Multiple scientists have tried to disprove the data since & it backfired every time.
A thing that consistently happens in Western science is that results that don't fit normative prejudices get ignored or explained away

It's important to have a diverse group of analysts to minimize blind spots
