I will add the following: our students lack the research skills required to audit an LLM essay for errors. They don’t arrive on campus with these skills; we teach it to them over four long years. So throwing freshmen in the deep end and saying “swim your way to a shore of rectitude” is folly.

2024: first book

I don’t know what 2026 will bring, but I can guarantee that it will not be my second book.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

This is a glorious takedown of an inexplicably popular book.

Though I also have to our on my pedant hat to insist that it is not a contradiction for someone with “left” politics to also be an apologist for imperialism. For much of the 19th century, liberals were the imperialists!
Episode 46: Sapiens

It's an ambitious goal to write the entire history of humanity in just 400 pages. It's even more ambitious to do it without reading any research.

One of them funded my research trip to the British Library, so the joke was on him.
When I was researching my book on blackface throughout the British Empire, *several* Brits both insisted that blackface was a US thing *and* that they remembered the BBC’s Black and White Minstrel Show fondly.

My biggest fear when visiting a foreign country is that after a day of wandering I'll happen upon a little museum of me. Shuffling along with other tourists through rooms of my discarded effects and lost memories, unable to translate the labels. Learning nothing about myself.

We have an entire chattering class with the moral and philosophical sophistication of the creators of South Park.
legitimately i think one of the core failings of centrist pundits is that they have come to define themselves by what they are against--to chart their intellectual course by who they think is being annoying this week--instead of by recourse to genuine principle

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?
