I wish it didn’t feel so unusual and inspiring to see a leader treating everyone like they matter and saying that we have a responsibility to help each other
Combatting poverty and hunger in this city will take every single one of us. Myself included.

Re-routing of ships around the Cape of Good Hope led to a natural experiment.
By "comparing NO₂ [unaffected by the sulfur-reducing regulations], with cloud droplet number, which is sensitive to sulfur, [they] found a 67% reduction in ships' cloud-altering abilities" after the new IMO regulations.
When trade routes shift, so do clouds: Researchers uncover ripple effects of new global shipping regulations
When militia attacks disrupted shipping lanes in the Red Sea, few imagined the ripple effects would reach the clouds over the South Atlantic. But for Florida State University atmospheric scientist Mic...

Wow I am blown away by this new data on Australia's climate views

Highest levels of outright science denial since 2009. Highest level of 'gov't is doing too much' (!!!)

And more people afraid of 'self aware AI' than climate.

What a nightmare set of results

Went looking for COVID19 death statistics recently:

18.2 million people worldwide, 1.13 million in the US

We still have no day of remembrance or mourning.
Estimating excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic analysis of COVID-19-related mortality, 2020–21
The full impact of the pandemic has been much greater than what is indicated by reported deaths due to COVID-19 alone. Strengthening death registration systems around the world, long understood to be ...

1/ Today, ProPublica is running a piece I've been working on for a bit. It's about what happened with a devastating wave of bird flu earlier this year, as egg prices hit record highs.

And it's a story that illuminates the ways the U.S. is failing to control what could become the next pandemic. 🧵

Hmmm…what USAID wasn’t bad for America…what if getting rid of it only hurt us and everyone else?

What if the richest man in the world being responsible for ending aid to the poorest people in the world will go down as one of the most bizarre and disgusting acts of the 21st century?

One of the very many reasons why I have not a single ounce (not one) of respect for RFK Jr’s MAHA cult is that they are not just dismantling vaccination & issuing harmful dietary advice (eat more saturated fat!)—they’re also sickening us through spewing dangerous chemicals poisoning the environment

For 41 weeks now, I’ve been sitting down every Friday night to chronicle the damage this administration is doing to science & higher ed.

We must stay focused. We’re in this for the long haul. We are finding ways not just to block them, but build something better.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

Another low hum in the background is antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Most of CDC’s funding goes to state and local health programs, which are crucial for keeping these bugs from spreading. Undermining that system is one thing that keeps this poster up at night.
