Because I was maybe 4 years old I just assumed this was just a really big and important piece of culture, not something that I experienced chiefly because I was born in exactly the right 5-year span to live through the mini-revival associated with the movie.

I remember being surrounded by Dick Tracy media in the early 90s. Pretty sure I saw the movie? There was also a Genesis game. I recall having a Dick Tracy action figure and his iconic yellow car. I was annoyed that you couldn't put him in the car so my parents cut a hole in the top for me.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

“Inflation caused 2024” is a comfortable and appealing explanation for a lot of people - it reinforces their patronizing sense that most voters are selfish little piggies with no inner life, it promises that things will be back to normal next time - but there’s really not any evidence of it
