Think it's time to revive the JB Stan account

My brother did too, now that you mention it

Because I was maybe 4 years old I just assumed this was just a really big and important piece of culture, not something that I experienced chiefly because I was born in exactly the right 5-year span to live through the mini-revival associated with the movie.

I remember being surrounded by Dick Tracy media in the early 90s. Pretty sure I saw the movie? There was also a Genesis game. I recall having a Dick Tracy action figure and his iconic yellow car. I was annoyed that you couldn't put him in the car so my parents cut a hole in the top for me.

to everyone saying it wasn’t a hit: it had the third highest opening weekend of 1990 and it was the 9th highest grossing film of the year

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

I can't believe weapons development timelines are shorter during war than peace. This is unheard of, surefire evidence of bureaucratic rot

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

The fact that Trump, a complete self obsessed narcissist, is currently experiencing distress for the fact he may experience consequences -for the first time - in the afterlife for the pain he's caused others, is funny to me.

Trump: "I don't think there's anything that's gonna get me in heaven. I think I'm not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to make heaven."

Thank god we have police to take multiple complaints about a guy sexually abusing infants and ignore them for several years

2024 was about inflation in exactly the same way 2016 was about email security
whstancil.bsky.social
“Inflation caused 2024” is a comfortable and appealing explanation for a lot of people - it reinforces their patronizing sense that most voters are selfish little piggies with no inner life, it promises that things will be back to normal next time - but there’s really not any evidence of it

1) I once again take this opportunity to remind you: to keep its basic functioning, society has to discourage baldfaced lying, especially by authorities

2) is...is it happening?

STEPHANOPOULOS: I didn't insinuate anything. I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50k as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024. You did not answer the question. Thank you for your time.

VANCE: No, George, I sai--

STEPHANOPOULOS: We'll be right back

I recall it varying by department whether they would give you a full permit. That's why the 2A people get all up in arms about "shall issue" vs "may issue".

The way I imagine this working is new Dominian making/supporting baseless claims of "irregularities" that give elected GOPers cover to ignore election results.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
If that happens, the only path left is Amerimaidan (or worse).
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
This is the first piece of news I've seen since the start of Trump II that feels like a real five alarm fire. Maybe I'm not thinking it through carefully enough, but if this guy wants to rig elections I don't really see how we stop that.

Sorry to say, increasingly unlikely that this will be solvable without doing a lot of things many of you feel very uncomfortable with

"Please Mr. Trump, disarm me." Like, what?

Best indication that this is a full culture war issue for liberals is that their opinion is totally unaffected by changing circumstances

People who push for more gun control under Trump truly baffle me

My Fellow Americans,
Today, I am proud to announce Liberty Vote - a 100% American-owned election technology company dedicated to restoring trust in our elections. Our mission is clear: every vote must be secure, fair, and verifiable.
I have spent my life working to strengthen America's elections. That commitment began years ago, in the aftermath of the 2000 election, when I worked for the Missouri Secretary of State. Later, as Election Director in St. Louis, I led the effort to modernize outdated systems and rebuild public trust. Eventually, I founded an election technology company that today serves nearly one in four voters nationwide.
With Liberty Vote, we are building on that legacy. We are turning the page and beginning the vital work of restoring faith in American elections. While these changes will not happen overnight, Liberty Vote's mission is rooted in American values and committed to transparency, independent audits, and verifiable paper records.
Our purpose is simple: to ensure that America's elections are secure, fair, and honest.
