one more time, with feeling

having a very nice debate here about something very important

who says this place has no juice
Because disease is never, in any time or place, ever only about biological mechanisms. Thst's just not how it works. Theres no reason to think the wanpanoag did not do things to mitigate its effects

Have you read Paul Kelton's work on smallpox and the Cherokee? If not you should

The more I think about this the more I think I may not agree. Like, it is maybe okay to talk about shitty colonizers sometimes without always needing to bring up context, indigenous allies, etc.

Also, "agency" remains a weird category that I have a lot of issues with
The depopulation of native tribes from New England due to smallpox exposed massive divisions between tribes who went to war with one another, and tended to compete with one another to make European allies to tilt the scales in these wars.

Native agency shouldn't be ignored

Siiiigh. The Pequot War involved native peoples on both sides of the conflict. A huge part of this war was Europeans allying with native tribes fighting their own dispute.

New England native history is fascinating because it doesn't fit into the simplistic Euro colonizer boxes as nearly.
yes, the first generation of Pilgrims were allies with the Wampanoag. But the Pequot War was pretty f'ing bad. And so wa lots of other stuff about them. If you are the type of person who feels bad about things that happened 400 years ago there is plenty to work with here

I remember back when I was an M.A. student I read a book about the history of medicine. I thought it was horrible, and remember telling myself "holy shit what a terrible field, i never want to do that" So now I'm a historian of medicine, which seems fair

Promote your book, or maybe just finish it?

For a small fee I will go to your enemy's conference presentation, listen quietly for a bit and go home

Just being honest here
For a small fee, I will go to your enemy's conference presentation and ask "Why does everyone always have to make everything about [their topic] these days?"
For a small fee, I will go to your historian enemy’s seminar presentation and say “I guess I’m just wondering what the “so what” of this paper is?”

Right, he's the Pope. Being the Pope. He's a pretty great Pope so far, as far as I can ell, but if you are freaky he is gonna cause you some friction because of his Pope-ness. Maybe don't worry about it. Unless you are Catholic, of course, in which case I got nothing for you, sorry
look, polyamory is extremely not for me but I have a ton of friends who it works great for, so obviously I disagree with him here

but I always find it very funny when you get a bunch of outraged posts about the Pope being Catholic

even if he’s pretty cool for a Pope he is, you know, the Pope
In a new doctrinal note, Pope Leo and the Vatican sharply reject polygamy and growing Western polyamory, praising monogamy as an exclusive union between one man and one woman.

In my opinion, it is not worth engaging with MAHA's CDC. I do not see any utility in submitting comments for the ACIP docket. There is ongoing litigation aimed at undoing the damage Kennedy has done to ACIP, but that litigation will, in no way, turn on the commenting docket for future ACIP meetings.

jfc this is bleak. has eugenics always been this closely tied to the profit motive? i kind of think maybe, but not sure?
Markwayne Mullin on healthcare: "What the president would like to do is say, hey, if you take care of yourself -- you don't smoke, you don't dip, you're not drinking, you're not overweight, you're working out -- then you should pay less than the guy that obviously is not taking care of himself."

I beg you, if you know anyone who writes for the Atlantic please for the love of God shame them until they stop
Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?

Can anyone help me with a question re: indigenous cosmology among Algonquin speaking peoples of the Northeastern Dawnlands? I'm wondering if kinship relations - which extended beyond one's immediate family to include other people, animals, the spirit world, etc., also included one's enemies? Thanks

Literally EVERY parent should ban Roblox
Every parent whose career has to do with online safety also bans Roblox.
Every game designer parent I know bans Roblox for their kids

This whole thread is a great read.

“…AI provides coherence and validation, stabilizing the narrative…” is a hell of a phrase, which I think can be applied both as risk statement and value prop.
The content is still obviously delusional to anyone reading it. It’s just organised crazy. But the real danger is the internal effect on the user. The AI provides coherence and validation, stabilising the narrative they’re caught in.

I closed social media for like three hours and the Pope threw a rave, MTG resigned, and Trump endorsed Mamdani before Chuck Schumer did? Now accepting bribes to close social media for all of next week
November 22, 2025 at 2:54 AM
maybe Mamdani can get Stephen Millier fired
November 22, 2025 at 2:01 AM
I hope Mamdani and Trump become real friends. I mean that.

Trump just wants to be loved. The only way he really knows how to do that is through fear. But you can see that he knows other ways are possible. You can see it in how he talked about FDR

Mamdani could show him.
