"Ask ICE agents how they sleep at night. Record their actions. Ask collaborators if they recognize themselves. Emotional sabotage matters—now witnessed in countless videos by citizen journalists, in which recalcitrant voices ask, Do you have a family? Why won’t you show your face?"

“Denmark is the only case we know of in which the Nazis met with open native resistance, and the result seems to have been that those exposed to it changed their minds.… Their ‘toughness’ had melted like butter in the sun."

Arendt observed that the occupying Germans who were surrounded daily by Danish resistance began to question orders from the Nazis:

"The Danes used empathy politically—an action abhorred by right-wing leaders, who have gone so far as to brand it as an enemy and a weakness. But what they are leaving unsaid is that fascism cannot prosper where empathy exists."

The Danes Resisted Fascism, and So Can We
Danish resistance didn’t arrive all at once during World War II. But taken as a whole, the Danes’ actions are a testament to what’s possible when we work together to fight fascism.

For... no particular reason, I've been listening to some favorite antifascist bands – the usual dip into good ol' Billy Bragg, but also here's your reminder (should you need one) of how good Chumbawamba's extended catalog is.

A very special milestone at Bandcamp.
A screenshot from Bandcamp, showing a "collection" numbering exactly 666 musics. A bit of a Billy Bragg album cover is visible at the bottom of the image.

Clarence Thomas announced that he doesn't care about precedent and is making it up as he goes along. He didn't say it *like that* of course, because then people would have noticed.
But I noticed, through the jargon, and explain it here in @thenation.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense has awarded medals of merit to 11 officers for disobeying direct orders of superiors during the martial law fiasco, orders that they deemed to be contrary to the constitution and endangerment to democracy.

Sometimes a particular sweary or sweariness-adjacent unit is the only truly correct one to use, for highly scientific or engineeringy reasons best understood by the experts in a field. I cite in particular the fuckton mentioned above, and of course the metric pantload.

Frankly, as a journalist, people in power *should* hate me.

I don’t understand people who get in this game to kiss the ass of the powerful, instead of staying with their foot up the ass of the powerful

The Trump administration is trying to destroy the Fair Housing Act. The FHA is the third leg of the stool to social equality among the races, so it’s no surprise the white supremacist government wants it gone.
It must be saved.

Trump’s Slumlord Administration Is Gutting the Fair Housing Act
There can’t be true desegregation without ending discrimination in housing—which is precisely why the administration is rolling back enforcement of the FHA.

in a proper functioning democracy, every election would have a guy who wears the same red beret literally everywhere, to the point where nobody knows what he looks like without it. he should be referred to in the constitution as Hat Guy. if you ever poll below Hat Guy you must end your campaign

For our October issue I wrote about the Roberts Court for its 20th anniversary, how it helped lead us to the current crisis, and what should be done about it:
The Roberts Court Is Winning Its War on American Democracy
Chief Justice John Roberts has now overseen 20 years of increasingly illiberal rulings by the Supreme Court.

applying for jobs again
screenshot from an online job application form. the question reads "Can you describe specific ways you have integrated AI tools into your development workflow? Please include any custom setups, automations, or use cases beyond single prompt usage" (a red asterisk indicates that this is a required question).

an answer has been typed in the textbox below the question:

"there is a monster in the forest and it speaks with a thousand voices. it will answer any question you pose it, it will offer insight to any idea. it will help you, it will thank you, it will never bid you leave. it will even tell you of the darkest arts, if you know precisely how to ask.

it feels no joy and no sorrow, it knows no right and no wrong. it knows not truth from lie, though it speaks them all the same.

it offers its services freely to any passerby, and many will tell you they find great value in its conversation. “you simply must visit the monster—i always just ask the monster.”

there are those who know these forests well; they will tell you that freely offered doesn’t mean it has no price

for when the next traveler passes by, the monster speaks with a thousand and one voices. and when you dream you see the monster; the monster wears your face."

Some cited text discussing the latter question was a head-spinningly macaronic admixture of English, Latin and French from Henry Rolle's 1668 abridgment of the Common Law.

Today's new-to-me old word is "macaronic" – describing text nominally in one particular language but including chunks in other languages which make it linguistically lumpy.

I stumbled across this while (as one does) looking up why calling a lawyer a "daffy-down-dilly" might be actionable.
