This is Mohammad Salman Hamdani. His parents were Pakistani and Muslim immigrants and came to the U.S. when he was an infant.

He was an EMT and NYPD cadet who rushed to the Twin Towers on 9/11 to help victims. He died there attempting to save lives. He was 23.

Just a quick PSA that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in your public movements. This is why law enforcement can follow YOU or photograph YOU in public without reasonable suspicion or probable cause. Law enforcement doesn’t get “extra” protection in that regard. Goose/gander etc.
Because he’s doing his job…reporting. Because we still live in a free country with a First Amendment and a free press.

Many of us were notified that we lost SNAP benefits today. It may be temporary.

For me, SNAP gave me some freedom to eat. As someone who is poor with a long history of eating disorders and economic insecurity it is slowly hitting. I’ve had SNAP for less than 6 months. It made my life a lot better.

I have a young relative who lost her job and is currently looking for another. She had a zoom interview for a position, and I overheard part of it. The employer asked her if she had kids, how old they are, and about their daycare.

Those questions lead to discrimination…obviously.

Breaking: The Supreme Court is now officially considering taking up a case overturning same-sex marriage.

This is the first time in history the court has considered rolling back this right.

Note that other countries are talking soberly about whether or not it's possible to fill the vacuum left by the U.S. - not whether or not the U.S. is still looked to as a leader.

For folks asking if they've made it *inside* a Home Depot yet as the business has clearly just continued letting agents do whatever they want in their lots, the answer is yes. This is from yesterday in Evanston.

I'm not sure you can get more marie antoinette than taking away food stamps before thanksgiving while you build a gold and marble dance hall so the other crooks can bring bribe you over a badly-cooked (argentinian) steak

Mike Johnson is now pretending that it's Rep-Elect Grijalva who is not doing her job, when he's the one shirking his duties.

And even *he* knows this is bullshit. He corrects himself to call her "Rep-Elect" not "Rep" because he actually understands there's a very important difference.
Mike Johnson: "Rep. Grijalva can work -- Rep.-elect Grijalva can work for her constituents right now. Constituent services, answering the phones, she has computers and 16 employees and there's no excuse for it. The Epstein files are being released."

There's a *lot* going on in the three different state lawsuits challenging President Trump's federalization of National Guard troops under 10 U.S.C. § 12406.

Via "One First," my attempt to break down where things stand, how we got here, and what to expect next:

185. The State of Play in the National Guard Cases
It's hard to keep track of the whirlwind of litigation surrounding President Trump's unprecedented deployments of federalized National Guard troops. Here's a quick update on where things stand.

The Marco Rubio DOS is announcing a policy of non-compliance with the Leahy law that matches its full and utter contempt for human rights. "The US State Department has removed an online portal for reporting alleged human rights violations by foreign military units supplied with American weapons."

42 million low-income Americans are at risk of losing food assistance Nov. 1 if the government shutdown continues.

Even if a shutdown deal were reached immediately, the time needed to process the payments means benefits would likely be delayed.
