The question to ask all young men is 'how many people have you helped this week? how many have you cared for?"
MTV going out of business this year. I was just telling my son how there was an entire SEGA Genesis game based entirely on Michael Jackson's video for Smooth Criminal.

Poignant shit.

the article was such a hit he made it into a book
It's been a while since I read it, but I have a hunch this influential article might reveal some old DNA for the RBIO, with a "core" inside the order and a "gap" outside. www.esquire.com/news-politic...
Why the Pentagon Changes Its Maps
And why we'll keep going to war.

We’ve got goldenrod and aster feeding the bees in October
When I first became a master gardener, I attended a native plants lecture with two takehomes for backyard growers with more limited space--one of which was that goldenrod is one of the biggest bangs for your buck as far as native plants go. Plant goldenrod!

Different Trains
Feeling kind of low today back at work, so to get through the afternoon I'll be posting an occasional thread of my favorite train-related songs.

We'll start with the old Wabash Cannonball, an entirely mythical train until the Wabash RR adopted the name in 1949.

I'm surprised how many people are quick to make a defense of violence in my replies. For them it's necessary, foreclosing on its use is a privilege. For me, non-violence is a powerful tool. It is the lesson of one of my heroes, Bayard Rustin. 1/ wagingnonviolence.org/2022/08/reme...
Remembering the genius of Bayard Rustin
Thirty-five years after his death, the man who mentored Martin Luther King Jr. still has much to teach movements.

can we do we dare we
pause
to behold
with awe & gratitude
this indescribable gift/opportunity—
simply
to be here,
alive,
for our (precious!) while…

may we grow to serve such blessing.

I'm constantly curious about what global cuisines were like prior to the introduction of capsicum, tomatoes, potatoes, maize, etc. I know potatoes in particular largely supplanted things like turnips and parsnips in Europe, but I'm especially curious about peppers.

Wishing West Africa a blessed Tabaski
From Maryland's beautiful Eighth Congressional District to the world, I'm wishing a blessed Eid al-Adha to everyone celebrating. During this holy feast, we pray for community, light and peace. Eid Mubarak!

The best Memorial Day speech is only 271 words and wasn't delivered on Memorial Day, but on November 19, 1863. Read it carefully, it's the most important speech in American military history (and maybe all of American history).
I'm reading something now that gets into that same territory.

What is an ethnic food few people in America know that you feel they should know? I am fortunate to live in Washington, DC and even as much as I enjoy meat, I don't miss it when I eat Ethiopian food.

You know about pawpaws? Totally different flavor profile from mangoes but the short shelf life, custardy vibe are in the same family. This dumb country almost eradicated its greatest native fruit, but they are making a comeback!

Flipped through this and found Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love as No. 1. Tough to argue against it.
